3 people in custody, 1 at-large, following house break-in and chase in Castle Hills

Three people are in custody and one person is on the run after they allegedly tried to break into a home in Castle Hills on Thursday, police said.

Castle Hills police officers responded to a suspicious persons call to find a man sitting in a vehicle parked in the backyard of a home.

According to police, the man noticed the officers and quickly got out of the vehicle and ran. That’s when, police say, two other men and a woman exited the back of the house and also tried to run on foot.

Police said both of the officers were able to track down and arrest the two people they were chasing. They did, however, have to request additional support from San Antonio police in order to try and find the other two remaining suspects.

SAPD said during their search, they were able to find and arrest one female suspect. The names and ages of the people arrested have not been released. One person from the break-in, however, remains at large.

The vehicle the man was in was found to be stolen and had fictitious license plates, police said. Heroin and methamphetamines, along with a handgun, were also found during a search.

Castle Hills police say the suspects were in the process of burglarizing the home and that the two men and the woman will now facing numerous felony and misdemeanor charges. They are working to identify and locate the fourth person involved.

12 On Your Side: Space heaters, price hikes and sales

Brrrrrrrrr, y’all!

Now, this is fuzzy-socks-by-the-fireplace weather. As long as you don’t have to venture out much and you have heat, it’s okay for a day or two. I much prefer heat to cold, though. (Remind me of that in August, right?)

If you’re plugging in a space heater, some reminders: turn it off when you leave or go to sleep and don’t use power strips or extension cords. The heater’s strong current can be too much for them and cause them to overheat and spark a fire.

I know a lot of you stocked up on soup fixin’s and other groceries before the cold arrived. And, I expect you noticed higher prices on some things. Kraft Heinz is the latest food manufacturer to announce it’s going to raise some prices next month. That includes Oscar Mayer lunch meats, hot dogs and Capri-Sun juices. You’ll probably notice the price of Tide and some fabric softeners going up soon, too. Procter and Gamble announced increases coming at the end of this month. We have some ways to cut costs here.

As you spend more time on social media – and ‘fess up, you know you are – be aware of scammers who have nothing better to do than to try to rip people off. The Federal Trade Commission says last year was a doozy as the bad guys used all kinds of tactics like investment schemes and bogus online product sales. You can check out that story here.

Here’s a parent alert about popular infant loungers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges parents not to use Leachco Podsters or the Bummzie because of the risk of suffocation. The products are not intended for sleep, which the company states. But, it’s so tempting for a parent to leave a baby where they fall asleep.

If you’re thinking about a new mattress or a new TV, February is a good time to snag a deal. Oh, and once Samsung comes out with its new cell phone, look for prices to fall on older models.

Girl Scout cookie sales are on, and mine have already been delivered. I remember in the olden days selling them for 50 cents a box! Times and prices have changed a bit in xx years.

Enjoy your weekend, and put those Thin Mints in the fridge. They’re even better cold. Or, just put them on the back porch today.

Stay warm!

Looking for a good deal? Here’s what’s discounted in February

February is short but sweet on deals. With Presidents Day, Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl on the calendar, shopping experts say you can expect to see some deep discounts on some big-ticket items.

If you’ve been looking to upgrade your phone, this may just be the time.

“We’re expecting Samsung to unveil its new Galaxy S phone this month. That means you’ll see prices on older models start to fall as retailers get ready to move the new models,” said Consumer Reports’ Samantha Gordon. “You’ll also see trade-in deals to get that new phone. You give your old phone up, you get the new phone for a lot less.”

Consumer Reports tracks prices on many of its top-rated products all year so it knows when prices hit their lowest.

If your drafty home could use a space heater, you can save some cold cash this month. The Comfort Zone CZ499R is reduced to about $53 at The Home Depot. It got excellent scores in CR’s fire safety tests.

If you just want to hibernate under the covers, you’re in luck, too. Presidents’ Day is one of the best holiday weekends to shop for a mattress.

“You’ll see some of the best discounts from all of the major brands,” Gordon said.

The Tuft & Needle Original is one Consumer Reports recommends as a “best buy.” A queen size is regularly $895. However, all of their mattresses are 20% off for a couple of weeks, so you can save $179 on that particular mattress.

February can also be a good month to find a deal on a tablet. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.0 (2019) is marked down to $128 at Best Buy. Supplies are limited.

And, with the Super Bowl coming up, now is the time you can score on a new TV to watch the game. Presidents’ Day sales on TV’s have started early. Look for the biggest discounts on the biggest screens.

WATCH LIVE: Portion of I-10 in Kerrville closed due to jackknifed big rig, icy conditions

A portion of Interstate 10 near Kerrville is at a standstill on Friday morning due to an accident and blockage amid icy conditions.

Kerrville police said the westbound lanes of I-10 are still closed as of 7 a.m., but the eastbound lanes toward San Antonio have reopened.

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office said the cause of the backup is a jackknifed semi-truck about a mile west of Harper Road on I-10. The semi-truck jackknifed just before sundown Thursday.

One of the issues TxDOT is experiencing is getting to the semi-truck, and with the rolling hills, they need ice to thaw for traffic to start moving again. The blockage could last until lunchtime Saturday, KSCO says.

Road conditions are worse Friday morning than Thursday, Kerrville police said. Officers are asking travelers to stay home if possible unless it’s an emergency.

“Our friends at KCSO worked through the night dealing with multiple accidents on the interstate,” police said, adding that the roads are slick in places.

Around the Hill Country, one-tenth to one-third-inch of ice has occurred in spots and temperatures fell into the teens.

San Antonio is expected to get above freezing — in the upper 30s — when the sun makes an appearance on Friday.

Update from officers on the street: road conditions in town are worse this morning than they were yesterday. Travel is…

Family manages to safely escape mobile home fire in Southeast Bexar County

A family of six is out in the cold after escaping a fire inside their mobile home in Southeast Bexar County early Friday morning.

The fire was called in just before 4 a.m. at the Lake Village Mobile Home Community in the 5000 block of Trout Lane, not far from Highway 181 and Interstate 37.

When firefighters arrived, they fought the fire with water from an aerial truck and were able to quickly knock down the fire. The mobile home, however, appears to have heavy damage as a result of the flames.

A man who lives inside the mobile home told KSAT12 that his family did manage to make it safely out. They are now currently huddled for warmth inside two vehicles. The man said he doesn’t know how the fire started, but did say he noticed an electrical smell. He said they may have also lost a puppy in the fire along with everything else, as the puppy is currently missing.

At this time, the exact cause of the fire is not currently known. The investigation is ongoing.

KSAT12 has a crew at the scene.

This is a developing story. Stay with KSAT12 both online and on-air for more information.

18-year-old killed in shooting during overnight meet-up identified by medical examiner

The Bexar County Medical Examiner has identified an 18-year-old man who was shot and killed during a meet-up in the middle of the night on the city’s East Side.

Adrian Ramirez was one of two people targeted by gunfire early Thursday morning, authorities said.

RELATED: 1 man dead, 1 wounded after being shot during middle-of-the-night meet-up

Police say Ramirez and another man had gone to the Houston Street Townhomes, located in the 4600 block of E. Houston Street, to meet up with someone and sell an unknown item.

At some point, the meeting turned violent, with the buyer shooting both of them and taking possession of the property.

Ramirez, who was shot in his chest, was pronounced dead when officers arrived after 12:30 a.m.

The other man was shot in his foot and is expected to recover.

So far, police have not made any arrests.

They say the only description they had regarding the shooter is that he or she left the apartment complex in a gray vehicle.
