The weather is the big story of the day and freezing temperatures in the KSAT viewing area have also brought icicles, among other things.

“Freezing rain and sleet has been reported throughout the overnight hours and into this morning,” KSAT meteorologist Justin Horne said Thursday of the San Antonio area.

“Precipitation is forecast to continue through the early afternoon, while temperatures may slip a few more degrees,” Horne said. “Temperatures are forecast to drop into the low 20s tonight. By around midday tomorrow, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing in San Antonio. Another hard freeze is expected Saturday morning.”

San Antonio, Bexar County officials hold winter weather update

As winter weather sets in throughout the San Antonio area, city, county and utility officials will hold an update on their response Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

The briefing will be livestreamed in this article.

Here’s what you need to know about today’s forecast:

HILL COUNTRY

Freezing rain and sleet is underway
Significant ice accumulation is likely.
A 1/10 – 1/3″ of ice is forecast to occur. Travel is NOT encouraged — untreated roads and bridges and overpasses will be dangerous. Freezing rain and sleet may linger until lunch Thursday.

SAN ANTONIO & SURROUNDING AREAS

A cold rain is now transitioning into freezing rain around San Antonio.
Ice accumulation of up to a 1/10″ is possible, especially on the north side of Bexar County.
Even a small amount of ice can make travel dangerous. For that reason, travel tomorrow is NOT encouraged, but if you must travel know that bridges and overpasses will become slick.
The freezing rain (and some sleet) is now forecast to continue into the early afternoon hours. The longer the precipitation lingers, the more potential for some icing. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing throughout the rest of the day on Thursday.

San Antonio nonprofit organizations open warming shelters for homeless population ahead of freeze

As freezing temperatures move through San Antonio, those experiencing homelessness are at great risk. Local nonprofit organizations are opening shelters to give them warm and safe places to stay.

Corazon San Antonio executive director Gavin Rodgers said two shelters would be open Wednesday night at the Travis Park Church and Haven for hope. On Thursday, at least five shelters will be open, with the option of adding more if needed.

“We have enough space completely for everybody right now who would need a bed whether that’s at Haven for Hope, at Travis Park Church, at our day center in the mornings we open up very early tomorrow our day center has extended hours,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers said the most important thing they’re doing is community outreach. He said his organization goes to homeless encampments, warns people that bad weather is coming, and offers shelters transportation. Unfortunately, some don’t want to leave where they are. If that’s the case, the nonprofit organization provides heating kits to help them get through the night.

“We’ll spend the next four days in the middle of the night driving around, making sure people are safe if it becomes really, really dangerous weather. Snow, sleet — we’ll go out there and make sure people if they decide to change their mind to get into a warm shelter. We’ll give them transport to these shelters,” said Rodgers.

He said roughly 20 organizations, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, assist and coordinate efforts. The goal is to get people off the streets and save lives.
