San Antonio among best markets for commercial real estate investment

If a new ranking is accurate, San Antonio’s hot market for commercial real estate will continue to sizzle in 2022. The ranking, from Austin-based CrowdStreet, positions the Alamo City as the country’s No. 14 market for commercial real estate investment this year, marking the city’s debut on the top 20 list. CrowdStreet’s online platform enables private investment in commercial real estate. San Antonio’s military presence, population growth, and retail growth led to “outsized growth” here…

Surveillance footage leads to arrest in Rivercenter mall-area shooting

San Antonio police have made an arrest in a shooting that happened at a Rivercenter-area parking garage last month.

Nathaniel Mora, 19, was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, records with the Bexar County Jail show.

An arrest warrant affidavit states the incident on Jan. 23 began when two women met at the Shops at Rivercenter for a fight.

After the fight, one of the women walked to the area of Bowie and Commerce streets, where Mora and his friends met her, police said.

Police said an argument between the man and woman erupted, and Mora opened fire in her direction.

No one was injured in the shooting, police said, and Mora ran to a Marriott parking garage.

Surveillance footage from the hotel showed Mora discharge one round and then run down a ramp to where vehicles were parked. The video showed him exiting through the employee entrance and walking toward Commerce Street, police said.

The next day, hotel security found a handgun with two shell casings in the parking garage.

The affidavit states it appeared the suspect attempted to hide the gun.

Records show Mora’s bond was set at $65,000.

Man arrested in woman’s death at West Side home, SAPD says

A man was arrested after San Antonio police found a woman fatally injured in a West Side home on Monday afternoon.

Officers first received a call for a dead person in the 2400 block of Texas Avenue, not far from Culebra Road and North Gen. McMullen Drive, at around 2:20 p.m.

That’s when they found a woman, 39-year-old Mary Ann Pompa injured. First responders tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead shortly after.

Her cause and manner of death were not released by SAPD or the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police said they interviewed 39-year-old Pedro Pompa, and his story was inconsistent with evidence at the scene.

He was later booked on a murder charge. His bond is set at $500,000, records show.

The relationship between the man and woman is unknown at this time. Police said the case is still active and under investigation.

SAFD crews extinguish fire in 2-story building just west of downtown

San Antonio fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a structure fire just west of downtown late Tuesday night.

The fire was called in just before 11 p.m. at a commercial building in the 900 block of West Houston Street, not far from Interstate 10 and West Commerce Street.

Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames on the second story of the building. Fire officials said firefighters had to ladder up to the second level in order to knock out the flames. The fire was put out quickly and without incident.

Fire investigators say they believe the fire started near a sofa and that the building was being used for storage as there are no working utilities inside. Authorities said they think the fire may have started by people trying to stay warm.

Both the San Antonio Fire Department and the San Antonio Police Department answered the call.

Damage to the building is estimated around $15,000, fire officials said.

Two injured after argument between neighbors leads to shooting, SAPD says

An argument between two neighbors led to both of them being hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after shooting at each other, San Antonio police said.

The shooting happened in the 100 block of Mercedes Street on Tuesday night.

Neighbors said they didn’t see the gunfight between the two men in their mid-40s to early 50s but later went outside and saw them on the ground with several gunshot wounds to the chest, arms, legs and torso.

The men were taken to the Brooke Army Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

It’s unclear what led to the argument between the two neighbors. KSAT will update this story with new information as it becomes available.

Animal Care Services warns to think twice before taking in a stray

San Antonio Animal Care Services is offering insight into what could happen if you take in a stray.

What started as a good deed for one woman led to several bills.

Tiffany Qualin is an animal lover, even jumping up during her interview with KSAT to help the neighbor’s puppy after it got out of its yard.

But after helping a stray last month, Qualin is vowing no more.

“I will no longer help another animal. And that’s really unfortunate, is breaking my heart,” Qualin said.

In November, a stray dog, now named Emmet, showed up at Qualin’s property in bad shape. She spent $1,100 in the week she cared for the animal before calling San Antonio Animal Care Services to pick him up.

Her good deed came with some unforeseen consequences.

“You’re the primary caregiver for that animal, and you’ve taken that animal into your home. You know, there’s some definite obligations by state law,” said Shannon Sims, the director of Animal Care Services.

Sims said Qualin’s act of kindness toward the dog made her the animal’s legal owner.

“It comes with a huge commitment,” Sims said.

That commitment was further solidified when Qualin picked up Emmet again from ACS to try and rehome him herself. She was met with a “reclaim to owner” fee of $131 broken down into impound, boarding, vaccination and microchipping fees.

“I’m being punished for a good deed because after I got home, my nephew took him that day and saw the dog nevermore,” Qualin explained.

A month later, a $300 citation from ACS for not getting Emmet neutered, something she says she unknowingly agreed to do when she signed a conditional release form.

Sims said it’s just a part of the process.

“She reclaimed that animal. She took that responsibility and was actually given a notice that you need to get this animal fixed within 30 days,” Sims said.

While Sims is sympathetic to Qualin’s plight, he hopes it makes people more cautious before opening their homes to strays that are not under their care.

“The last thing I want to hear is somebody with the best intentions in their mind getting into a bad situation,” Sims said.

If you have a stray hanging around your home, Sims recommends calling 311 and not allowing the animal into your home. ACS will pick it up, so you won’t have any legal responsibility to the animal.
