1 person injured in house fire on South Side, damage to home estimated at $85K, SAFD says

One person was injured in a single-story house fire on the city’s South Side early Wednesday morning, the San Antonio Fire Department said.

The fire was reported around 8:45 a.m. at a home in the 1000 block of Keats Street, not far from Division Avenue and Interstate 35.

Firefighters said when they arrived, they found a fully involved fire with flames coming from both the windows and roof of the home. The fire was put out quickly and without incident, the fire department said.

A lieutenant with SAFD said a resident inside the house had lit a warmer next to a mattress in an attempt to stay warm, but the mattress caught fire. The resident suffered minor injuries to his hand and was taken to an area hospital.

A sport utility vehicle next to the house was also destroyed by the flames, fire officials said.

Damage to the home is estimated at $85,000.

2 John Jay students arrested for bringing guns to campus in separate incidents this month

Two John Jay High School students have been arrested for bringing guns on campus in two separate incidents since last week, Northside ISD officials confirmed.

The latest incident happened on Tuesday after someone reported to administrators that a student may have a weapon.

That student was escorted to the administration office by school officials and NISD police where they found a gun in the student’s backpack.

John Jay Principal Teresa Cuellar sent a letter home to parents saying she shared the information “in the spirit of transparency” and said “this individual will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

“We will continue to remain vigilant to ensure our campus is safe. I want to commend the Jay HS students and staff who continue to show great responsibility and concern by reporting this information to school officials. Working together, we can ensure that our campus remains safe,” Cuellar said.

NISD officials said it’s the second gun found on the John Jay campus this month.

In a similar, but unrelated incident — another student was arrested on Jan. 18 after administrators found a gun in their backpack.

Officials said no threat was made toward campus in either incident.

City breaks ground on Hemisfair’s Civic Park in downtown San Antonio

City leaders and Hemisfair officials broke ground on Civic Park at Hemisfair in downtown San Antonio on Wednesday morning, kicking off an 18-month project.

City Council last month approved Phase 1 of the project, which will transform five acres of Hemisfair’s northwest corner of the park, at Alamo and Market streets.

The project will include a shaded promenade, the Shallows water feature and a lawn for large events up to 15,000 people. The park will also have Wi-Fi.

“As we head into year three of this pandemic, spaces like Hemisfair have become even more essential to the mental wellbeing, physical health and connection of all our residents,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “And Hemisfair’s Civic Park is the great gathering place for all our city’s needs.”

A portion of the funding was approved by voters in the 2017 Municipal Bond.

Phase 2 of the park is pending 2022 bond funding.

In the map below, Phase 1 is the green shade and Phase 2 is the brown shade.

Here are some ways to navigate home improvement while avoiding disagreements

Making decisions with your significant other can be challenging, especially when it comes to making home renovations.

I’s a project that can bring couples together, but it can also bring tons of disagreements.

The good news is there are some simple ways to navigate home improvement and keep everyone happy through the process.

First, when working your way through your project, remember that compromise is key. Go into it mentally prepared for it. Compromise will come into play in style or design, budgets, priorities and even in who you hire to complete the project.

If you can, start small. Learn how each of you work before tackling the bigger renovations that will have more of an impact on your home.

One project that tends to lead to disagreements: landscaping.

Since something like that can lead to conflict, you might consider calling in the pros. That way you and your family can focus on the more fun parts of the project.
