COVID-19 positivity rate increases to 39.4% in Bexar County, Metro Health data shows

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is reporting a COVID-19 positivity rate of 39.4%, a 1.1% change from last week’s rate of 38.3%. This week’s risk level remains at “severe” and is worsening, officials said.

The progress and warning indicators — including a two-week case comparison, hospital trends, average case rate and positivity rate — are critical. Hospital stress is severe. These indicators and the positivity rate are updated on Tuesdays.

Tuesday’s COVID-19 Numbers

Metro Health’s COVID-19 dashboard reported 5,455 new cases and a 7-day moving average of 5,540 cases. There were 15 new deaths reported, according to the data. Forty-nine new deaths have been reported over the past seven days, totaling 5,062 since the pandemic began.

There are 1,277 COVID patients in local hospitals, with 286 in ICU and 119 on ventilators. Metro Health’s dashboard shows there are 10% of staffed beds available and 61% of ventilators available.

City health officials offer the following testing guidelines

Consider using a self-test before joining indoor gatherings with others who are not in your household.A positive self-test result means that you have an infection and should avoid indoor gatherings to reduce the risk of spreading the disease to someone else.A negative self-test result means that you may not have an infection. SAPD makes arrest in connection with fatal shooting at MLK Day celebration

San Antonio police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting that left one man dead and four others wounded during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on the East Side.

More details will be made available during what’s called a “perp walk” Tuesday at around 4:40 p.m. at Public Safety Headquarters, where the suspect will be transported to the Magistrate’s Office.

Police said Johnnie Mobley Jr., 61, was fatally shot when someone opened fire at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 17 in the 700 block of Spriggsdale Boulevard near Interstate 10 and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Two other men, ages 37 and 57, and two women, ages 43 and 34, were also injured.

Police said around 30 to 60 people were gathered in a parking lot for a “peaceful” celebration of MLK Day when a man walked up, opened fire and ran away.

2 men found dead in abandoned tanker trailer in Guadalupe County

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the bodies of two men were found in an abandoned oil tanker on Monday afternoon.

Authorities said a worker with the Texas Department of Transportation first reported a body in the trailer in the 8900 block of Highway 90, between Seguin and Kingsbury.

When GCSO arrived at the scene, they discovered an additional body inside the trailer.

Deputies, along with the Seguin Fire Department, Guadalupe County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Schertz Fire Department, deemed the air quality was safe enough to remove them from the tanker.

The autopsy results are pending, and they have not been identified.
