San Antonio, Bexar County officials provide update on winter weather response

San Antonio, Bexar County, CPS Energy and San Antonio Water System officials will provide an update on winter weather response efforts Thursday.

The update begins at 1 p.m. It will be livestreamed in this article.

All hands are on deck Thursday at the Bexar County Emergency Operations Center, which was activated in response to the cold snap.

The on-site team says they are not taking anything for granted and although they are not anticipating any high impact weather situations, they are prepared.

The EOC works in preparing, preventing, planning, responding and, if needed, deploying recovery efforts from hazardous events.

Fire officials say there were a lot of lessons learned after Winter Storm Uri that swept the region last year. The EOC said the day is an excellent opportunity to ensure they are active in responding to the communities needs in several ways.

On Thursday, part of their effort is making sure warming centers are open and available to those who need shelter.

From inside the EOC, emergency personnel can dispatch and respond to emergencies or disasters within Bexar County and the region. They also coordinate relief and recovery operations.

As the cold front settles the EOC reminds the public to protect the four p’s: people, pets, plants and pipes. They also urge everyone to adhere to heater and fire safety.

💻 Kids wanna know: How does Google gather information? What does it take to be a technology leader?

Editor’s note: This story was published through a partnership between KSAT and noun, an educational platform designed to provide engaging content online for students and teachers.

Kids, did you know there was once a time without Google and search engines? Can you imagine a world and having to look through books and newspaper articles for bits of information?

Not that long ago people used encyclopedias and news clippings as a source of information. Not their cellphones.

In this week’s KSAT Kids edition of “Kids Wanna Know,” students interviewed technology executive Amy Eschliman, who works for Google Cloud Retail Industry Solutions and asked what it’s like to do the job she does.

Students learned what skills are needed and what it means to be a senior vice president of a company like Google. They learned what type of education skills a leader needs, along with how Google gathers and delivers its information.

They also learned some of the different types of jobs that are presently at a company like Google.

San Antonio doc dives into Shark Tank with device that stops hiccups

Humans are weird. Take, as a perfect example, the phenomenon of hiccups — the sudden and involuntary spasm of the diaphragm muscle between regular breaths. All humans experience them, and so do other mammals and even amphibians. But we’re guessing other animals don’t approach treating hiccups in the wacky ways humans do. For instance, some less-than-successful hiccup remedies of lore include sipping water upside down (and subsequently trying to not drown), holding one’s breath for…

Temporary overnight shelters opening for people experiencing homelessness in San Antonio

With extremely cold temperatures heading our way, temporary overnight shelters for people experiencing homelessness are opening.

The local nonprofit Corazon San Antonio opened their day center early to serve as a warming center and to help advise people which shelters have space tonight.

“On days like this, temperatures can get really dangerous and people can suffer so we really want people to get into respite. Get into warm areas and we can learn what their needs are and help them the best way we can,” Gavin Rogers, executive director of Corazon San Antonio said.

Several people made their way to the center off McCullough Avenue and Avenue E in downtown to get away from the cold.

People received a meal for both breakfast and lunch.

Shelters all over San Antonio opened due to the extremely cold temperatures.

“Haven for Hope has an extra winter shelter, there’s one at Church Under the Bridge, Life Restored Church, various congregations and there’s also our Corazon Shelter at Travis Park Church,” Gavin said.

The Corazon Shelter at Travis Park Church opens at 6 p.m. and can accommodate about 40 people socially distant.

People will be provided with bedding, breakfast, dinner, showers and medical care.

Gavin said they are working closely with other nonprofits to find out which shelters have space to help everyone in need.

Shooter purposely targeted home where toddler, man were wounded, police say

San Antonio police say a drive-by shooting that left a three-year-old boy and man hospitalized with gunshot wounds was no random crime.

They say it appears the shooter purposely took aim at a home in the 200 block of Moraima Street around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The toddler and man, who is 22-years-old, were inside the home at the time.

According to a preliminary police report, the shooter was in a car that pulled up in front of the home and stopped.

They say for some reason, someone in the car fired into the home, then the vehicle sped away.

Both victims were in critical condition as they were rushed to a hospital, police said.

Officers at the scene said they did not have much of a description when it came to the shooter and getaway car.
