Reboot of Scream rehashes same old story to desired effect

When the original Scream came out in 1996, it was a blast of fresh air in the horror genre with its self-referential style that still managed to contain some genuine thrills. Its subsequent sequels were met with less enthusiasm, as the franchise seemed content to just rehash the things that made the first film so successful. Twenty-five years later, we have arrived at the fifth installment, cheekily — or lazily, depending on your perspective –…

COVID-19 test site opens at Wonderland of The Americas

If you’re looking for a free walk-up COVID-19 test site at a more centralized location, a new spot has opened at an already familiar place.

On Friday, Community Labs started offering testing for the virus at the Wonderland of the Americas in Balcones Heights. The site will offer PCR tests through self-administered nasal swabs and results are expected to be returned within 24-48 hours.

In addition to testing, the site also offers vaccinations and boosters. The facility is the only site with combined testing and vaccinations in Bexar County. The recent surge in COVID-19 cases brought on by the highly contagious omicron variant prompted health and city officials to make more resources readily available to the public.

Officials Friday night said that 1,953 received a test on the first day.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg along with Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff toured the facility located on the mall’s first floor.

“It’s sort of a unique mass testing site and a mass vaccination site upstairs and a testing site down here, we’re still doing around a thousand vaccinations a day up there so we’re thankful people are coming out,” Wolff said.

In a statement, University Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bryan Alsip said people with COVID-19 should wait for their symptoms to subside before getting a vaccine.

“People with COVID-19 should wait to be vaccinated (with either primary series or booster dose) until after their symptoms resolve and they have met the criteria for discontinuing isolation,” he said.

The Wonderland of The Americas testing site will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday on a walk-up basis only.

As people head out to various testing sites across the city, health officials remind the public of “fake” testing sites and urge everyone to ensure the test sites are legitimate.

Fraudulent sites can be reported through the Federal Trade Commission website.

SAPD searching for couple involved in hit-and-run of 2 vehicles on East Side

San Antonio police officers are searching for a driver and passenger involved in a hit-and-run that took place on the East Side on Friday morning.

SAPD said at around 8:30 a.m., a red SUV hit a GMC SUV on Martin Luther King Street near South New Braunfels Avenue.

The crash caused the GMC to roll over, resulting in minor injuries for the driver.

The red SUV fled the crash but struck another vehicle around the corner, police said. It is unclear if anyone in that vehicle was injured.

The SUV’s driver continued until the vehicle became inoperable. A couple inside the vehicle then abandoned it on Delmar Street, police said.

Once found, they will face charges of failure to stop and render aid.

Taft High School theater director named KSAT12′s first Educator of the Month

KSAT12 has launched a new series called “KSAT Educator of the Month” and the first winner is Amanda Pyle, Taft High School’s fine arts coordinator and theater director.

Pyle led her theater students to a state championship in the One Act Play in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I love teaching,” Pyle said. “I’m so passionate about it. I always tell them that this is my dream job and that I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”

However, Pyle said initially she had different plans for her career path.

“I went to college in California,” Pyle said. “I went to USC and I wanted to be an actress and do all of that. And I did that in Los Angeles for a little bit and I was like, ‘I’m done.’”

Pyle said at the time, she didn’t “love” what she was doing, so she made the move to San Antonio to pursue something she did love.

Now, Pyle is in her 14th year of teaching and her ninth year at Taft High School.

“Last year was really hard, but we had a really cool ending to the year,” Pyle said. “We won the state championship in the One Act Play and that was amazing, but to know the lasting impact that I can have as an educator, that means the most to me.”

Pyle’s students were excited and proud that she was recognized as KSAT’s Educator of the Month.

“It means a lot because I know she works like crazy, hard,” Briana Chavez, a theater student said. “I constantly know what my strengths and weaknesses are and I feel like she does a really good job at teaching us how to grow like wherever we are in our theater journey.”
