San Antonio among top markets for homes in master-planned communities

The San Antonio area is working to master the art of the master-planned community. A report released January 4 by RCLCO Real Estate Advisors shows the San Antonio metro area was home to one of the 50 top-selling master-planned communities last year. Just squeaking onto the list, at No. 43, was the D.R. Horton Valley Ranch community on San Antonio’s Far West Side. Some 478 homes sold there in 2021, an impressive figure, though that…

6 new laws go into effect on Jan. 18 in Texas

Hundreds of new laws have gone into effect in Texas over the last several months after the 87th Texas Legislature passed bills pertaining to everything from permitless carry to police-worn body cameras.

A staggering 666 new laws went into effect in September and an additional 23 went into effect on Jan. 1.

On Jan. 18, six more laws will go into effect in Texas.

One of the new laws states that unattended dogs will no longer be allowed to be restrained with chains or heavy weights outdoors. Additionally, it prohibits an owner from leaving a dog without adequate shelter, shade from direct sunlight, drinking water.

Another amends the Education Code to prohibit students competing in interscholastic athletic competitions, to participate in a competition designated for a different biological sex than what is listed on their birth certificate.

However, it “provides an exception to allow female students to compete in a competition that is designated for male students under certain circumstances,” according to the bill analysis. Circumstances include allowing female athletes to compete in a male competition if a female equivalent of the competition is not offered or available.

Here are the six new laws with descriptions provided by the Texas Legislature:

HB 1 – Relating to the composition of districts for the election of members of the Texas House of Representatives.HB 25 – Relating to requiring public school students to compete in interscholastic athletic competitions based on biological sex.SB 4 – Relating to the composition of districts for the election of members of the Texas Senate.SB 5 – Relating to the unlawful restraint of a dog; creating a criminal offense.SB 6 – Relating to the composition of the districts for the election of members of the United States House of Representatives from the State of Texas.SB 52 – Relating to the issuance of revenue bonds to fund capital projects at public institutions of higher education, the oversight of certain capital projects at those institutions, and the designation of certain appropriated funds allocated to those institutions.

The parade is free and runs through the streets of downtown San Antonio.

The Vaquero Cook-Off takes place just before the parade starts from 8 to 11 a.m. in Market Square. It’s also free to the public and there will be live music in addition to food and drinks.

Charreada

Charreada is Mexico’s official sport. It originated in the 16th century, predating and inspiring, the American Rodeo.

It was popularized by the charros of Jalisco and the nation of Mexico and upholds the customs and family traditions of Mexican Horsemanship.

“The first charreadas were ranch work competitions between haciendas,” according to the San Antonio Rodeo. “The competing charros often came from families with a tradition of Charreada, and teams today are often made up from extended families who have been performing for up to five generations. It is best described as a mix of rodeo skills and dressage, with riders showing traditional competitive roping and ranch skills, but also exquisite costumes, custom tack and horse grooming and horsemanship skills.”

The Charreada for San Antonio Rodeo 2022 will take place at the Freeman Coliseum on Feb. 27.

Bloom sculptures of native flowers come to life in San Antonio parks and trails

If you have walked, run or ridden in some of the San Antonio city parks or trailheads recently, you may have noticed large beautiful sculptures depicting South Texas native flowers.

No, they didn’t bloom overnight, as the seeds behind the project were planted five years ago.

The San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture along with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department were looking for ways to enhance local city parks and greenways with public art.

The goal? To increase neighborhood connectivity, create a visual identity for the linear creeks, and to place more art on greenway trails. It’s how the bloom sculpture series came to life.

The first one was planted at Mud Creek at McAllister Park in 2019.

With the help of input from residents about which indigenous flowers to create, San Antonio artist Leticia Huerta and Wanderlust Ironworks brought the radiant oversized metal flowers to life.

“I’m really proud of it because it’s my first large scale free standing sculpture as a public art project,” Huerta said. “Figuring out how to make something three dimensional at least for me I’m not a sculptor. I’m proud of that effort and I’m proud of how well received that project has been.”

The flowers resemble larger than life bicycle parts. Simon and Autumn Saleh helped weld and bring Huertas designs to their actual size.

“We come out here and we do some brain storming with raw materials and we figure out how far we can curve say a bowl or a dome shape and we figure out how to attach things discreetly where it’s not just industrially welded and it really creates the illusion of some hybrid mechanical flower,” Simon Saleh said.

Two more installations will be complete by this summer at Salado Creek at South Side Lions Park and Leon Creek at the Tezel road facility.

Currently you can see the blooms at five city parks, and the most recent installations at Farias Park and Brazos Pocket Park on the city’s West Side.

SAFD: Molotov cocktail suspected cause of fire at boarded up restaurant on Northwest Side

San Antonio fire officials say they believe someone intentionally set fire to a former restaurant on the city’s Northwest Side early Friday morning.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. at what used to be Joe’s Crab Shack in the 4700 block of NW Loop 410 near Babcock Road.

Fire officials say a San Antonio police officer happened to be driving by and saw the smoke and called it in. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire inside the building.

Authorities say it appears someone threw a Molotov cocktail through a window, triggering the sprinkler system. The sprinkler system put out most of the fire.

The restaurant has been closed and boarded up, so no one was inside and other buildings nearby were not threatened by the fire.

Firefighters said this is the second time they’ve had a suspicious fire at the building within the last few months.

As of now, investigators have not made any arrests.

Man stabbed multiple times during domestic dispute in North Side apartment, police say

A man in his 40s is in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times during a domestic dispute at a North Side apartment complex, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at the Indian Hollow Apartments in the 12700 block of West Avenue, not far from Wurzbach Parkway and Bitters Road.

According to police, the man was stabbed several times with a knife by a woman in her 30s during an argument while inside their shared apartment. It is unclear what the argument was about.

The wounded man was taken by EMS to University Hospital, where his listed in critical condition.

The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all answered the call.

SAPD did not say what charges are expected to be filed against the woman.
