South Texas town’s patriotic extravaganza honors Washington’s Birthday

George Washington probably never chose to celebrate his birthday in Laredo, Texas. Nor was he even alive by the time Laredo threw him his first birthday party on February 22, 1898. A celebration with such deep roots is what attracts locals and visitors to the first U.S. president’s annual birthday party each year in Laredo, which transpires a mere 2 1/2-hour drive from San Antonio during a weekslong extravaganza, this year from January 21 through…

The City of Boerne and the Texas Department of Transportation said the demolition of an old bridge at I-10 and Highway 46 will start at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21. The construction will last until 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24.

Both the westbound and eastbound traffic will take Exit 540 to SH-46/Bandera Road to enter the access roads. The traffic will continue through the Highway 46 intersection and get back onto I-10 at the next entrance ramps.

The new Highway 46 bridge over the interstate will be closed during the construction, and traffic will have to turn on the access roads.

According to previous KSAT reports, the work is part of TxDOT’s I-10 Kendall Extension project, which is upgrading frontage roads and overpassing from SH 46 to Fair Oaks Parkway.

A complete list of lane closures and other project information can be found on the TxDOT San Antonio district’s blog.

Pop-up COVID-19 vaccination, booster clinic taking place Monday in front of Bexar County Jail

A pop-up COVID-19 vaccination and booster clinic is taking place on Monday at the Bexar County Jail, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

The event will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in front of the adult detention center in the 200 block of North Comal Street, not far from West Martin Street and Interstate 35 downtown.

The COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots are free and no appointment is needed. For those wishing to receive a booster shot you should bring your vaccination card, the press release said.

The BCSO said as the COVID-19 infection rates continue to trend upwards in the community, the importance of mitigating the spread of the Omicron variant remains a priority for public health at-large. The Center for Disease Control recommends vaccinations for everyone ages 5 years old and older.

“Our community is undergoing a surge of COVID-19 cases due to the fast-spreading Omicron variant, and we all need to continue to take precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “While the case numbers are surging, the data indicate that vaccines are preventing severe illness. Vaccines remain the best defense against any variant of COVID-19. Get vaccinated, wear a mask and stay home if you are sick.”

The pop-up clinic is being hosted by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office along with the Texas Department of Emergency Management, the Texas Military Department, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rebecca Clay-Flores, and Bexar County Precinct 2 Commissioner Justin Rodriguez.

San Antonio man demands justice after wife killed in crash with suspected drunken driver

A driver is charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault after 53-year-old Gabriella Padilla was killed and several others were injured in a crash on the Northwest Side earlier this month.

It happened at the corner of Culebra Road and Zarzamora Street on January 1st.

“I will always love her. I love her so much. When they’re alive, give them all your heart because they die and you can no longer give it to them and the pain stays,” said Freddy Ramos, Padilla’s husband.

Ramos said Padilla leaves behind three kids, the youngest being 13-years-old.

He described her as an excellent person and mother, and said the last week has been devastating.

Ramos is asking the justice system to hold the driver responsible fully accountable. He tries to forget for his own peace of mind but adds, he still vividly remembers seeing her body after the crash.

“I saw my wife passed out in the seat of the car. I wanted to go and grab her but they wouldn’t let me,” said Ramos.

Police said a red Dodge truck ran a red light and crashed into a Chevrolet truck.

The collision sent the Chevrolet through the intersection and into a Jeep.

According to SAPD, Edwin Sanabna Pena, 26, was the driver of the Dodge truck. Police found him to be intoxicated after the crash and he was booked for intoxication manslaughter and three counts of intoxication assault.

Pena’s bond is set at $375,000 for all of his charges combined. He is currently being held in the Bexar County Jail.
