City of San Antonio, police union negotiators reach agreement on contract

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

After just over a year of negotiations, city and union negotiators have hammered out a tentative deal at the bargaining table for a new contract covering San Antonio police officers for the next four-and-a-half years.

The deal includes various changes to officer disciplinary processes, including an attempt to limit an arbitrator’s power to reinstate fired cops. It also includes 15% in annual raises through FY 2026, along with a 2% lump sum payment to officers when the contract takes effect.

The tentative agreement still needs to be approved by the membership of the San Antonio Police Officers Association (SAPOA) and the San Antonio City Council before it’s official.

The deal came at the end of the two sides’ 33rd meeting since talks began in February 2021.

San Antonio cheesecake shop donates more than $72,000 to Ukraine’s army

A Ukraianian-owned cheesecake shop in San Antonio raised thousands of dollars to donate to the country’s army, which has been under siege by Russian forces for the past week.

Laika Cheesecake and Espresso, located at 4718 Broadway, announced last week that all its sales over the weekend would go toward Ukrainian forces. Customers lined up for hours to support the cause.

On Tuesday, Laika Cheesecake Owner Anna Afanasieva revealed that the shop raised $72,405. She plans to post receipts of the donations, she said in an Instagram post.

“This is completely mind-blowing, we have never expected this much support,” Afanasieva said. “We are very very grateful to everybody who showed up.”

Some customers showed up just to donate money. Afanasieva said roughly $25,000 of the total raised came from donors.

The cheesecake shop is not done helping the Ukrainian people, though.

Afanasieva said her shop will continue to accept donations to Ukraine, both at their store and online.

San Antonio man arrested after relatives find child porn on computer, affidavit states

A man was arrested after his relatives reported seeing “disturbing images” involving children on his computer, according to San Antonio police.

Gabriel Serrano, 49, was arrested Tuesday and charged with possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony, according to records with the Bexar County Jail.

An arrest warrant affidavit states that the investigation started in May, when relatives discovered the images on his computer at his Northeast Side home.

The reporting person left the computer at the home and did not confront Serrano, but they documented the image gallery and called the police.

Serrano had a library of images involving children who were nude and engaging in sexual acts, the reporting person told police, according to the affidavit.

Investigators later searched his computers and confirmed the image gallery, the affidavit states.

His bond is set at $75,000, jail records show.
