Some home security systems vulnerable to hacking, Consumer Reports says

Millions of us rely on home security systems for protection. But what if those security systems themselves are not so secure when it comes to attacks from hackers? Consumer Reports found that some of them can be disabled in a matter of seconds with a process called “jamming.”

“Jamming is when a burglar or hacker blocks the wireless signal of a door sensor, window sensor, or motion sensor in a security system,” said Consumer Reports’ Dan Wroclawski. “That allows them to access your home without actually triggering the alarm.”

In its latest tests of 10 home security systems, Consumer Reports found five susceptible to these types of attacks: Abode Iota, Cove Home Security, Eufy 5-Piece Home Alarm Kit, Ring Alarm, and SimpliSafe the Essentials. Abode and SimpliSafe can detect jamming and alert the homeowner that it happens, but the alarms won’t trigger. The other systems offer no user alerts.

Consumer Reports shared its findings with all of the security companies. Eufy was the only manufacturer that explicitly said it would fix the jamming risk in a future update. Cove said it “plans to add jam detection to its system next year, but likely as an optional feature.”

“The good news is that jamming attacks are very rare, and security systems and other low-tech security solutions will often deter burglars,” Wroclawski said.

If you own one of these systems, he said there isn’t a need to rush to replace it. The Ring and SimpliSafe systems performed well in other tests, including motion detection and ease of use and setup.

The Kangaroo Front Door Security Kit was not susceptible to CR’s jamming attacks.

If you want to beef up your home security system, adding some security cameras to the mix can add an extra set of eyes. They can record what’s happening and are not easily jammed.

No matter which alarm system you have, safety experts suggest not using the branded yard signs or decals that came with it because that could alert a hacker to your specific type of system. Instead, use generic signs and decals.

Bexar County Republicans narrow early vote margin in 2022 primary, data shows

Bexar County Republicans showed more enthusiasm during early voting this year, narrowing the deficit between the two parties, according to data from the county’s election department.

After two weeks of early voting, 47,169 Bexar County Republicans cast a ballot in the primary, while 50,484 Democrats also voted during the early period.

That margin is much more narrow than the last midterm in 2018 — when 41,184 Republican primary ballots and 51,917 Democratic primary ballots were cast.

The numbers could indicate growing momentum for Republicans this year, who have rallied against President Joe Biden’s policies over the last two years. It could also be the result of contentious statewide primary races in the GOP, including the governor’s office and the attorney general’s office.

Democrats were also more energized in 2018 in response to the 2016 election of President Donald J. Trump, leading to a more competitive primary.

Overall, however, the voter turnout rate in 2022 was slightly lower than in 2018.

In 2022, a total of 97,653 ballots were cast during early voting — amounting to 8.18% of the county’s 1,194,389 registered voters.

In 2018, 93,101 ballots were cast — 8.6% of Bexar County’s 1,085,664 registered voters.

The numbers do not include absentee ballots. Officials with the election department did not respond to requests seeking comment on Monday.

Turnout may have been dampened by last week’s winter weather, which brought temperatures near freezing in Bexar County.

Voters were most likely to head to the polls on Friday, the final day of early voting, the numbers showed. That day accounted for more than 20% of the early vote total, meaning roughly 1 in 5 voters cast their ballot on Friday.

Full primary turnout will be determined after Election Day, slated for Tuesday.

Theft ring investigation leads to seizure of firearms, rare collectibles, Kerr County officials say

A man is in custody after a theft and burglary ring investigation by the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office led to the seizure of firearms, ammunition, rare collectibles and drugs.

Kerr County officials said Bayron Baize was arrested in Gonzalez by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.

An investigation involving several burglaries in Kerr County and surrounding counties also led to arrest warrants for Michael Jeffrey McCollum, Billy Wayne Paine III, and Tom Hunter Ransleben.

Officials said multiple locations were searched. Officers found firearms, ammunition, a firearm suppressor, and 7.7 grams of methamphetamine.

Various collectibles, including silver, rare coins, rare comic books, and rare collectible figurines, were also seized.

“Anyone who has been a victim of theft knows it’s not just the value of the items in question, but peace of mind that is also taken. This investigation will be ongoing, and we’re not stopping until every related case has been submitted for prosecution,” Kerr County Sheriff Larry L. Leitha said.

Man in critical condition after shooting near downtown bus stop, San Antonio police say

A shooting near a downtown San Antonio bus stop left one man in critical condition on Monday, according to San Antonio police.

Officers were called to the 200 block of S. St. Mary’s Street shortly before noon where a man was shot multiple times in his head and body.

Police Chief William McManus said two men got into an argument. Both pulled out a gun during the argument, but one of the men walked away, while the other opened fire on him.

McManus said that homicidal violence has been on the rise in San Antonio due to erratic behaviors and arguments.

“In the wake of a number of recent shootings that have happened, I’ve said this repeatedly that a lot of the violence is caused by altercations, arguments, road rage just as we have here today,” McManus said.

The suspected shooter was taken into custody and he is being questioned.

Police remained on the scene as they gathered evidence and sought out witnesses.
