Far North Side pizza joint cited for dead pests, live roach, presence of flying insects

A far north San Antonio pizza restaurant was cited last month after a city health inspector found dead pests, a live roach, and the presence of flying insects.

Center Court Pizza and Brew, located in the 20700 block of Wilderness Oak, received a score of 78 and was also written up for having no hot water in some handwashing sinks, Metropolitan Health records show.

The establishment also was docked for having heavy grease and debris accumulation on its vent hood system.

Woman shot during altercation on NE Side street, San Antonio police say

A 19-year-old woman was shot in the arm during an altercation on the city’s Northeast Side early Monday morning, San Antonio police said.

Officers were called around 3 a.m. to the 5800 block of Spring Valley, not far from Judson Road and Nacogdoches Road after receiving word of a person wounded.

According to police, two women were having an altercation in the street when one of the women pulled out a gun and fired, shooting the victim in the arm. The suspect fled in a red vehicle, police said.

The wounded woman then went to a nearby house where she asked for help. She was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center by EMS for her injury.

SAPD said they are now talking to a witness who fled in a car when the shooting happened. Officers currently do not know why they were on this particular street.

As of now, the suspect has not been found. A description of the woman was not released. SAPD also did not say what the argument was about.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Man and woman wounded in East Side shooting, police say

San Antonio police are investigating after two people were wounded in a shooting on the city’s East Side early Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in the 300 block of Bellinger Street, not far from Interstate 10 and Martin Luther King Drive.

According to police, a man and a woman were leaving a bar when three people began shooting at them from across the street. That’s when, police say, the pair got into a car and drove to a hospital to get help.

Police said the man and woman are presently listed in stable condition at Brooke Army Medical Center. Their names and ages are not currently known.

SAPD did not give a motive for the shooting. A description of the suspects was not released.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.

Woman begs for return of pets’ ashes after truck stolen with urns inside

A San Antonio family’s truck was stolen but it’s what was inside of the vehicle that has them desperate for its return.

“Bebe passed away on January the 31st. My birthday was on February the 2nd. On February the 4th, I lost Pearl,” Patricia Arredondo said.

It’s been a hard month for Patricia and the Arredondo family. They lost two of their beloved pets — Bebe the toy poodle and Pearl the umbrella cockatoo.

“The house is very quiet now,” Arredondo said.

As she’s done with others, Arredondo had her pets cremated at Becker’s Animal Hospital and her husband offered to pick up their urns on the way to his cousin’s funeral.

“He picked them up for me and he came to the rosary,” Arredondo said.

While her husband was inside for his cousin’s service, thieves were out in the parking lot working on taking off with his truck with the urns still inside.

“Losing them the first time was really, really hard,” Arredondo said. “Then to lose them a second time, it’s like unbelievable.”

The red 2001 Ford F-250 with the license plate GLB4090 was gone without a trace.

In 2021, an SAPD report showed that was the second-most stolen vehicle in our city.

Arredondo’s husband’s truck isn’t the only one stolen recently. On February 19th, a vehicle left running at a convenience store was stolen with a 7-month-old baby girl in the back seat.

Vehicle burglaries are on the rise across the city. An undercover officer with SAPD says they’re crimes of opportunity.

An opportunity that took away something irreplaceable to the Arredondo family.

“Just have a heart, have a heart and just let…let me get them back home,” Arredondo said.

SAPD is trying to find Arredondo’s truck.

Patricia is begging whoever took it to at least return the urns, she says they can be dropped off at Becker’s Animal Hospital with no questions asked.

San Fernando Cathedral holds special masses amid conflict in Ukraine

“Right now, I cannot be in Ukraine. I wish to be able to do something more concrete there, but prayer unites us. Prayer helps us to be one mind and one heart,” said Archbishop Gustavo-Garcia-Siller, of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

On Sunday, Archbishop Gustavo presided over a special morning mass at the San Fernando Cathedral.

Typically, between the end of Christmas and the beginning of Lent, an archbishop’s vestment would be green. This morning, purple was worn ahead of Lent to convey through symbols a powerful message.

“The symbol of penance, of fasting, prayer, abstinence and at the same time and as you can hear in the background that is the bells are in a tone of a funeral, “Archbishop Garcia-Siller said.

There was a somber ringing of the cathedral’s bells, symbolizing the lives already lost in what the archbishop calls a useless and selfish situation.

At the center of the oldest, continuously operating cathedral in Texas, a white candle dressed in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

“With an image of our lady, they have a devotion to our Lady of Pecoff, which to intercede for them and we will continue to be as close as we can to their situation,” Garcia-Siller said.

Pope Francis delivered the Angelus noon prayer in St. Peters square at the Vatican and made a special invitation to everyone on Twitter.

I renew my invitation for everyone to take part on 2 March, Ash Wednesday, in a Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace in #Ukraine, in order to be near to the suffering Ukrainian people, to be aware that we are all brothers and sisters, and to implore God for an end to the war. pic.twitter.com/ecNo53Ofya

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) February 27, 2022

“The pope’s message is that this coming Wednesday that we title Ash Wednesday be a day of fasting, prayer and sacrifice for the people of Ukraine,” Archbishop Garcia-Siller said.

Through collective prayer, congregants at the San Fernando Cathedral humbly made their special petitions for the men, women and children in Ukraine.

“So, I believe that our prayer and the prayer of the whole world, especially on Wednesday, will make a difference,” Garcia-Siller said.

SA: Ready to Work program hopes to help residents receive ‘high-quality’ jobs

San Antonio City Council recently approved contracts for community partners to implement the $200 million SA: Ready to Work program.

The goal of the program is to place more than 28,000 people into either certification or degree programs and get at least 15,700 of them into “high-quality,” in-demand jobs.

Director of the initiative Michael Ramsay joined Leading SA Sunday to discuss the details of the program and what it could mean for the future of the Alamo City.

“SA: Ready to Work is a unique program. On the scale of waste, no other municipality in the country is making this type of an investment in its people. SA: Ready to Work has the potential to provide a talent base necessary for continued economic growth for companies that exist here today in San Antonio, as well as attracting new and emerging companies, get high-quality jobs for people. So we believe that that alignment between the skills that those companies are looking for, the talent base that we have here in San Antonio could be a game-changer economically for our community,” Ramsay said.

As San Antonio grows population-wise and company-wise, the hope is that this program better prepares San Antonians for the evolving job market.

“As those jobs continue to flood into the San Antonio community, the people who live here have to be equipped with the skills and the education that’s necessary to be qualified to fill those jobs. We know that a high-quality job is the answer to many of society’s ills, such as affordable housing… Making sure that individuals in the community have those access to those training and education programs to be competitive for those jobs when they arrive. And the jobs that are already existing here in our community is going to help those segments of the population who have been historically underserved and on the outside of those career pathways to building a leg in and make sure that our talent base here is strong for decades to come,” Ramsay said.

This program is expected to help thousands and thousands in San Antonio. The process to enter the program is simple, Ramsay said.

“If you’re a citizen here in San Antonio and you’ve been unemployed or underemployed and you’re looking for that pathway to get on to track to getting a career in an in-demand area and high growth, high wage sectors here in our city. Call 3-1-1. It’s as simple as that, and we can pre-register for the program that starts in April, and you’ll be assigned once those case management agencies are up and running later on this, this spring, you decide the case manager is going to help to coach, mentor and guide you and help you to navigate through the educational process to make sure that you matriculate through that training and development program on the air that meets your interests, your skills, your aptitude and is aligned with a good-paying job here in San Antonio. That is our commitment to you and take this opportunity to allow the community to wrap its arms of support around you to help you to achieve your goals,” Ramsay said.

If you have any questions about the program, you can find the answers here.
