Several hospitalized after shooting at Northeast Side shopping center, police say

Several people are hospitalized, including a child, after a shooting involving multiple people on the city’s Northeast Side, according to San Antonio police.

The shooting was reported around 5 p.m. near Austin Highway and Lanark Drive.

Officers found a wounded 31-year-old woman who was an innocent bystander in a laundromat where bullets flew through the glass and hit her.

Police said the shooting took place in the parking lot of the shopping center that housed the laundromat and other businesses.

Approximately 40 shots were fired from two different calibers. Police say multiple people are involved in this shooting.

The woman in the laundromat was taken to the Brooke Army Medical Center by emergency medical services.

Three people, ranging from ages 16 to 21, showed up at Northeast Baptist Hospital with a 1-year-old child. The three were injured from the shooting, and the child was likely wounded by broken glass, police said.

Police have not released a motive and are not releasing suspect information at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are limited at this time.

City of San Antonio backs off plans to remove 100 trees at Brackenridge Park — for now

Opponents of the planned removal of more than 100 trees at Brackenridge Park said they were relieved to learn the city’s Historic Design and Review Commission will not be taking a final vote Friday.

“Mother Nature wins for the moment,” said Lynn Cuny, founder and president of Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation.

San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh announced Tuesday afternoon that the city was pulling consideration of the $7.7 million planned improvements to Brackenridge Park. He said it would try again later this spring or summer.

“I have directed staff to pause consideration by the HDRC, which has dominated the conversation and distracted from the broader benefits of the restoration work, while we complete the design and work with our partners and stakeholders,” Walsh said.

At a news conference held at the park Wednesday, District 2 City Councilman Jalen McKee Rodriguez said he and District 1 Councilman Mario Bravo had been asking for the postponement.

Without a finished design, McKee Rodriguez said, “Wait until a design can be proposed, which would include community feedback and input before requesting removal of trees.”

Cuny, a longtime advocate for the egrets and other birds who nest in the trees at Brackenridge Park, said her group that has served the community for 45 years should be one of the stakeholders.

If not, she said, “Then all I can surmise from that is that they do not want to hear what Wildlife Rescue has to say.”

Connie Swann, a spokeswoman for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, said the methods being used to get the birds to fly away, are non-lethal and follow U.S. Fish and Wildlife guidelines.

“By reducing the numbers of migratory birds at Brackenridge Park, we anticipate areas of the park that have been uninviting to the general public will now be accessible for all our community to enjoy,” Swann said.

However, Cuny said, “Park improvement by destroying trees. Park improvements by destroying nature. I’m sorry. That is ridiculous.”

Cuny said it’s latest attempt to reduce the rookeries of federally protected migratory birds who flock to San Antonio during nesting season.

Although their droppings can become a public health issue after the birds arrive and the trees have damaged an historic wall nearby, Cuny said there should be a way to solve those issues.

“What should happen is that we should agree from the get go that no harm will be done to the trees or the animals,” she said.

These supplements may help you get better sleep

Trouble sleeping? You’re not alone. More than half of us say we’re not getting the uninterrupted sleep we need. Could sleep supplements be a dream come true?

Melatonin is a naturally produced hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle, helping to control when we’re sleepy and when we feel awake.

It’s a good option for people who may not produce enough of the hormone, and may also help those who work night shifts or are jet-lagged.

Store shelves are stocked with pills claiming to help you sleep, like Valerian root, used for centuries to treat insomnia.

And about vitamin D: Some research suggests that if your levels are low, taking a supplement may help you nod off faster and sleep longer.

If it’s restless leg syndrome keeping you up at night, your doctor may suggest taking iron.

But Consumer Reports says be wise when you shop!

The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t hold supplements to the same standards as they do over-the-counter and prescription drugs. It also doesn’t verify that what the labels on supplements say are actually in the supplements.

But groups like U.S. Pharmacopeia, ConsumerLab.com, and NSF do, by testing supplements for risky contaminants like metals or pesticides before they’re sold. So Consumer Reports says look for their marks or seals.

You may not think so, but some supplements can cause serious side effects. They can also interact dangerously with other drugs. Consumer Reports says make sure you always check with your doctor before taking any.

And don’t forget that you can also supplement your sleep supplements with a noise machine to block distractions that might be keeping you awake.

17-year-old arrested in connection with shooting that left 2 dead, 1 wounded

The San Antonio Police Department made an arrest Wednesday in connection with a shooting that left two people dead and one wounded.

Jerry Ortiz, 17, was arrested after he surrendered to police, SAPD officials said. Ortiz, who is charged with capital murder, is the fifth suspect arrested in connection with the shootout Monday near the intersection of Blanco Road and West Mariposa Drive.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. when a green Suburban was circling a gas station with five occupants parked nearby. Someone then came up to the car, and that’s when one of the passengers stepped out of the vehicle with a gun in his hand and a shootout ensued, McManus said.

“It looked like there was some sort of deal getting ready to go down,” McManus said.

A juvenile who stepped out of the vehicle was killed and another passenger was injured.

A man in his 60s who was at home at the time of the shooting was killed by a stray bullet in the incident, McManus said.
