Bicyclist hit during crash at Northwest Side intersection; SUV driver detained for erratic behavior, police say

A bicyclist was hit when an SUV crashed into another vehicle and spun onto the sidewalk of a Northwest Side intersection Thursday morning.

San Antonio police said the crash happened when the driver of the SUV was traveling southbound on Bandera Road and tried to turn left onto New Guilbeau Road.

The SUV crashed into a vehicle heading northbound on Bandera, and the SUV then spun onto a sidewalk. A bicyclist on the sidewalk at the time was hit and fell into a ditch, police said.

The bicyclist, a man believed to be in his mid-40s, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

Police said the driver of the SUV was “displaying some erratic behavior,” like appearing to stuff grass in the gas tank.

He was detained and will be tested for intoxicants “to determine whether it was an accident or if there’s a criminal offense or not,” police said.

At this time it is unclear who had the right of way.

3 Democrats are serious contenders in primary race for Bexar County judge

Before the general election, which will decide who will succeed Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, a competitive Democratic primary lies ahead in March.

In that race, State Rep. Ina Minjarez, former mayoral chief of staff Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, and former district court judge Peter Sakai are all vying to be the party’s candidate. On the Republican ticket, former Pct. 3 County Commissioner Trish DeBerry is likely to clinch the nomination against Nathan Buchanan.

Each candidate comes with political experience.

Minjarez has represented the West Side of San Antonio in Texas House District 124 since 2015. Meza Gonzalez served as Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s chief of staff, earning an endorsement from him. Sakai previously served as the 225th District Court Judge for more than a decade.

Minjarez touted her experience in the state capitol over the past six years. The legislator said her time in Austin has given her “specialized training” that makes her the right person for the office.

“I believe with the skillset I have received and leadership roles I have played at the Capitol, I am ready to come home and lead Bexar County,” she said.

Meza Gonzalez said she’s been involved in politics since she was young girl, going to union event with her parents. Prior to serving as Nirenberg’s chief of staff, she worked for the Spurs and the San Antonio River Authority.

“I have a passion for public service and a mother’s drive to get things done,” she said.

Sakai pointed to his experiences over the past 26 years as a district judge in Bexar County, overseeing the court system’s budget and presiding over cases involving drugs, domestic violence and family issues.

“I’ve made the toughest decisions,” Sakai said. “That’s what the next county judge needs to be prepared for, to confront and resolve the tough issues.”

Though each candidate has racked up different endorsements throughout the campaign, Sakai has led the way in campaign in fundraising. Campaign finance records showed he raised more than $135,000 through the month of January. His opponents only raised around $20,000 during that same stretch.

If the candidates fail to get more than 50% of the vote on March 1, a runoff would be set between the top two contenders for the Democratic nomination.

Whoever wins in November will succeed Wolff, who has held the post since 2001. Wolff announced he would not seek re-election during the 2021 State of the County address.

Television stops bullets fired through West Side woman’s window

Bullets that were fired through the front window of a woman’s West Side apartment Thursday morning thankfully were stopped in their tracks by a wide screen television.

The woman, who was standing just behind the TV at the time, was spared from any injury, as was her two-year-old son, who was in an upstairs bedroom.

She was too shaken to talk on camera about what happened at her home in the 100 block of Ocaso Walk.

However, she did show the damage to KSAT 12 News.

The shooting, which happened shortly before 7 a.m., left the glass on her window shattered and a hole in the back of her brand new TV, which she had just purchased recently.

“I was just barely getting up to get my daughter ready for school and all I hear is, ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop,’” said Lottie Alonzo, the victim’s neighbor and friend.

Alonzo says she rushed right over to check on the woman, fearing she might be injured.

“She was scared. I don’t blame her. I would be scared too,” she said.

The victim told San Antonio police she had heard someone banging on her door, then found two men there who asked for someone by name.

The woman says she told the men she didn’t know that person, then closed the door.

Seconds later, her window exploded from the gunfire.

The victim says she immediately crouched down and made a run for her stairs, anxious to reach her son who had begun to cry.

“I couldn’t imagine the (neighbor) getting shot,” Alonzo said. “Can you imagine having to explain to her little babies?”

Alonzo said luck was on her neighbor’s side, though.

The woman was in the right place to avoid getting hurt.

“She was standing at the door and the TV was in front of her. If the bullet wouldn’t have hit the TV, it would’ve hit her,” she said.

Police searched the area, but did not find the shooters.

They say the last time anyone saw those two men, they were driving off in a dark-colored car.
