Series of standoffs in Dilley ends with man shooting, injuring himself, police say

Editor’s note: We previously reported that the man involved in the standoff died from his injuries. At last check, police say he was injured and hospitalized.

A series of standoffs in Dilley Sunday afternoon has come to an end, resulting in a man being hospitalized from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Dilley police.

The incident began at the man’s residence on Merle Street in Dilley. Frio County deputies located the man, who is believed to be involved in a homicide in Pearsall, in his vehicle, but he refused to exit.

Following a short standoff, the man then took off in his vehicle, attempting to evade officers.

Police said the man then came to a stop on Kinsel Street and another short standoff ensued. During the standoff, Texas Rangers tried to make contact with the man on the phone but were unsuccessful.

Moments later, the man sped off in his vehicle again, but he ran over spike strips in the road that were set up by police. A short chase ensued and the man then drove off the road on Highway 85, just south of Houston Street, police said.

Authorities continued to try and speak with the man; however, he refused to speak or get out of his vehicle.

Just a short while later, police said they heard a gunshot from inside of the man’s vehicle. When officers approached, they found the man was injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers tried to do CPR on the man before he was rushed by EMS to an area hospital, according to Dilley PD.

“Please keep all of the families involved in your thoughts. We mourn as a community during senseless tragedies,” Dilley Police Chief Homer said in a release.

This is a developing story and we’ll bring more updates as they become available.

Man arrested for illegally releasing venomous cobra in North Texas last year, police say

Last summer, a venomous West African Banded Cobra escaped from its enclosure in North Texas, causing concern and fear among residents and police.

Nearly a year later, authorities still have yet to locate the snake, but they have found and arrested its owner for illegally releasing his dangerous pet into the public, according to a report from the Dallas Observer.

Lawrence Matl, 23, previously claimed his snake escaped its enclosure due to a “caging malfunction,” according to the Dallas Observer.

However, as of Friday, he was arrested by Grand Prairie police for allegedly releasing his pet snake either “on purpose, negligently or purportedly,” the Dallas Observer reports.

Currently Matl is being held at a detention center and his bond is set at $10,000.

The snake disappeared from its enclosure Aug. 3, 2021 from Matl’s residence in the 1800 block of Cherry Street, according to Grand Prairie police.

GPPD took to social media, warning residents of the venomous snake on the loose and to be on the lookout in case they spotted it around town.

According to the Dallas Observer, Matl’s accused of violating the “Release from Captivity” code under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. If convicted, he could face up to a year behind bars and a fine of up to $4,000.

Exotic snakes are permitted in the state of Texas; however, owners must obtain a permit issued by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. You can learn more about the permits and their requirements here.

Communities in Schools helps students stay in school by providing community of support, CEO says

Communities in Schools’ mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Recently they received a huge multimillion-dollar donation that can mean a lot for our Bexar County schools.

Jessica Weaver, CEO of Communities in Schools-San Antonio, joined Leading SA Sunday to discuss the program and what it means for San Antonio schools.

“Our mission statement is surrounding students with a community of support and ultimately empowering them to stay in school. And how we do that is we embed full-time professional staff, our backgrounds, our social work and counseling, and we embed them in the schools. And so what we do is we come inside, partner with our school counselors and our teachers and offer support services to students with any challenges that they may be facing,” Weaver said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not made life easy for local students and their families.

“The last two years have been challenging for everyone. And so this gift has really been great. An uplift to the expansion that we’ve been asked for and so many of our districts have asked us to move into more schools,” Weaver said.

Weaver explained the multimillion-dollar donation would mean further outreach in schools.

“Our parents will see that we are in more campuses and really that opportunity to be able to reach out to someone who can really help them through any kind of challenges of their child or their family may be facing,” Weaver said.

Communities in Schools is a program across the country, but the San Antonio chapter is dealing with a unique issue.

“And I think for San Antonio, what you know, what’s unique to us is we have so many school districts. So it’s not that you’re, you know, you get to see if there are some things that are happening across the board or if there are trends and those trends are really everywhere. So that’s one thing is disengagement. But kids went without their continuous learning. And so there’s no way that that did not impact them,” Weaver said.

Suspected drunk driver killed in rollover crash on Hwy 90, police say

A suspected drunk driver is dead after San Antonio police said he lost control of his vehicle and crashed on Highway 90 early Sunday.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 5000 block of US Highway 90 westbound.

Police said the man was traveling westbound on the highway in a beige pickup truck when his vehicle drifted onto the south shoulder and struck a guardrail.

The man overcorrected and crossed three westbound traffic lanes, striking another guardrail on the north shoulder of the freeway, according to SAPD.

The impact sent the vehicle up and over the guardrail before it vaulted and rolled several times before coming to rest in a grassy area just south of the access road, authorities said.

Police said the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and he was ejected from the vehicle. The man died at the scene from his injuries.

He was later taken to the Medical Examiner’s office by ambulance.

Authorities said the cause of the crash is likely intoxication, but it is pending toxicology results. The investigation continues.

$40 worth of stripped copper costs a West Side medical clinic thousands in repairs

A medical clinic in a West Side shopping center lost power for hours Saturday, jeopardizing its refrigerated medications and vaccines. Power was lost because suspects cut electrical lines to steal copper.

The shopping center is located on the corner of South Zarzamora and West Commerce. All businesses were without power until about 2:30 in the afternoon.

Regional Director of Cano Health Rafael Pena said he found out about the power around 9 a.m. For him being without power lead to a much bigger issue than not being able to make transactions.

“I have medications in my refrigerators, I have vaccines — not only flu but even Covid vaccines. I needed to make sure those were secure and safe and we actually loaded those up into an ice chest and transported them to another clinic so that didn’t compromise the integrity of the vaccines,” said Pena.

Pena believes the suspects used a dumpster to stay out of sight of his security cameras. They cut through a chain linked fence and stripped the copper off electrical wires.

Crime in the area isn’t new for Pena. He told us he’s had his work vans and building vandalized with graffiti. One man even relieved himself on his front door in the overnight hours. This most recent crime isn’t the first of its type either.

“Three weeks ago they came and cut that box and so my camera caught them. They brought a ladder. Believe it or not they had a ladder,” Pena said.

Pena has reached out to SAPD and the District 5 Councilwoman to see if they can add patrols to the area. As for the suspects, we are still waiting to hear back from police.
