Seguin, McQueeney experiencing natural gas service outage that could take days to repair

The cities of Seguin and McQueeney are experiencing a natural gas outage after what city leaders described as a “system crash” with a main line that provides gas service.

Centerpoint Energy said the outage could last for several days.

A Facebook post on the City of Seguin page included a release from Centerpoint Energy stating that the outage, which is affecting more than 4,300 customers, is a result of damage to another company’s pipeline that serves the towns.

“Safety will be our number-one priority as we work to restore natural gas service to impacted customers as safely and quickly as possible,” said Tal Centers, Vice President, Texas Gas at CenterPoint Energy. “As part of our safety procedures, we will start the process of turning off each customer’s natural gas meter. Repairs may take several days. Once the pipeline company finalizes its repairs, our crews will need to manually turn each meter back on.

“CenterPoint Energy is focused on providing service to critical facilities, such as hospitals, and will attempt to secure backup gas service to such critical facilities while the pipeline supplying natural gas to the towns is being repaired,” Centers added.

“More than 200 employees and contractors have been called to help with the restoration process,” Centers said. “At this time, no action is required on the part of the customer.”

Customers are urged not to turn any valves or tamper with the natural gas meter.

If there is a smell of natural gas, customers should leave the area immediately on foot and call CenterPoint Energy at 866-275-5252 and 911 to report and should not turn on or operate anything that might cause a spark including light switches or cellphones, CenterPoint Energy officials said.

City launches survey aimed at measuring, improving mental health of San Antonio teens

San Antonio youth leaders and city leaders launched a survey on Tuesday aimed at gauging the mental health of young people in the community.

The Teen Mental Health Survey was made by high school students for young people between the ages of 12 to 19. The online survey will be open until April 10.

The survey is a partnership between the San Antonio Youth Commission, Project Worth Teen Ambassadors, the Department of Humans Services and Metro Health.

The groups will officially launch the survey during an event in front of City Hall at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

The results will be used to help San Antonio youth leaders make suggestions about what would help improve mental health in teens.

Personal information will be confidential, but leaders did warn that some of the questions in the survey could trigger uncomfortable thoughts and feelings as the survey addresses drug use, self-harm and other mental health challenges.

“We know it can be hard to talk about these things, and we appreciate everyone’s honesty in responding to these questions,” the organizers posted on the survey webpage.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Surgeon General have all declared the mental health of children and adolescents a national crisis.

The webpage also reminds youth that there is a crisis text line available. Young people can get free, 24/7 emotional support and information by texting “HOME” to 741-74.

The survey is available in Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog and Pashto and can be found by clicking here.

Man arrested in 2019 slaying of San Antonio woman found shot in car along highway, police say

A man has been arrested for the 2019 death of a San Antonio woman who was found shot in her vehicle.

Rogelio Mujica, 36, was arrested Monday and charged with murder, according to records with the Bexar County Jail.

An arrest warrant states that he fatally shot Annette Juarez, 37, on March 2, 2019, while she sat in the passenger’s seat of her vehicle. He then abandoned that vehicle along U.S. Highway 90 on the West Side, police said.

A passerby later discovered her body when they went to check on the car.

Mujica and Juarez had an on-and-off relationship, and he had a history of family violence, according to the affidavit. Investigators said that Juarez previously made police reports of him assaulting her.

On the night of her death, her daughter saw Juarez and Mujica talking to each other outside her home, but she didn’t see her again after that, the affidavit states. The daughter tried to contact Juarez later that night, but she never responded.

Surveillance footage showed that the couple left the house in Juarez’s car and went to a convenience store to buy beer, investigators said. Another video showed him driving away from her house in his car at around 12:37 a.m. on March 3, 2019.

Her body was found about a mile away from her home.

Police spoke with Mujica on March 4, 2019, and he said they drove around for a few hours before they returned to the house. He said he used methamphetamine, was paranoid that he was being followed, and believed Juarez was working with “the Feds,” the affidavit states.

Authorities searched his vehicle and room and found an empty gun holster and live ammunition.

The ammunition was compared with two spent shell casings found at the murder scene, and police concluded that they had been “cycled” through the same gun “based on the unique markings made by the firearm,” the affidavit states.

A warrant for his arrest for murder was issued on Monday. His bond is set at $500,000.
