Precinct 1 corporal arrested, accused of forcing himself on woman inside vitamin shop

A corporal with the Bexar County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office has been arrested nearly two years after he was accused of forcibly kissing a woman inside a Southwest Side vitamin shop.

Cpl. Adam Salazar, 34, faces a charge of indecent assault, Bexar County court records show. He was taken into custody Friday, nearly eight months after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Salazar followed a female employee into an “employees only” section at a vitamin shop in the 2300 block of SW Military Drive in early February 2020 and “grabbed the complaint around the torso and kissed the complainant’s neck for ten (10) to fifteen (15) seconds as the complainant tried to push (Salazar) off,” a warrant for Salazar’s arrest states.

The warrant also states that the woman “felt (Salazar’s) slobber on her neck.”

San Antonio police investigated the case and later filed it at large with the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office. A warrant for Salazar’s arrest was issued in mid-April, court records show.

Reached for comment Tuesday, Precinct 1 Constable Ruben Tejeda confirmed Salazar has been working the past eight months, after the warrant was issued, because Tejeda was unaware that a warrant existed.

Tejeda said he placed Salazar on administrative leave late last week, after the DA’s office notified him about the pending case.

“I’m puzzled why that happened,” Tejeda said via telephone Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the DA’s office did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday about why Precinct 1 was not told about the active warrant for nearly eight months.

Tejeda said Salazar will remain on administrative leave while his criminal case plays out.

Sheriff stands by decision to fire corporal after he enters pretrial diversion for indecent assault

Salazar is scheduled to be arraigned in County Court 1 on Jan. 11. He is free on bond.

Indecent assault is a Class A misdemeanor and pertains to cases in which a suspect touches the private parts of another person without their consent, exposes or attempts to expose the private parts of another person, or causes someone to have contact with another person’s bodily fluids.

The law went into effect in the fall of 2019 as a way to close a loophole in nonconsensual groping cases in Texas. Previously, those types of cases were charged as Class C misdemeanors.

Salazar’s attorney, Roy Barrera Jr., declined to comment when reached via telephone Tuesday.

Salazar was featured in a KSAT story in 2019, ahead of his debut as a professional boxer.

Volunteers needed to stuff hundreds of holiday stockings for deployed service members, veterans

For some military members, the holidays mean spending it without their loved ones. But this Christmas a nonprofit organization hopes to brighten the spirits of deployed service members and veterans.

Soldiers’ Angels volunteers and staff are stuffing holiday stockings that will be shipped to service members deployed to combat zones and veteran patients in VA hospitals.

“For service members that are deployed, sometimes this is the only thing that they’ll be getting, especially if they don’t have family back home,” said Amy Palmer, president and CEO of Soldiers’ Angels.

The nonprofit will be shipping more than 40,000 stockings. They have different items, snacks and a special message from Soldiers’ Angels.

For retired army veteran Rich Scott, helping stuff stockings is what the holidays is all about. He remembers what it was like to receive care packages.

“I got care packages in Afghanistan and Iraq, and it was really cool to be able to share that the things that I got in those packages with other people,” Scott said.

The nonprofit is looking for volunteers to help stuff the stockings and monetary donations to help with shipping costs.

“I love being able to just, you know, put a little care into something that somebody is going to open over the holidays and be reminded that folks are thinking about them and folks are caring about them,” Scott said.

And just in time for the holidays, Soldiers’ Angels is also distributing food to 200 at-risk or homeless veteran families in San Antonio. To volunteer for the food distribution, click here.

Watch: Sentencing for woman who pleaded guilty in hit-and-run death of San Antonio surgeon

A San Antonio woman who pleaded guilty last month in the 2019 hit-and-run death of a prominent San Antonio surgeon will learn her sentence on Tuesday.

The sentencing will be livestreamed in the video player at the top of this article.

Melissa Peoples entered the plea during a court hearing on Nov. 30. She agreed to a 15-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to intoxication manslaughter and pleading no contest to a charge of failure to stop and render aid.

Peoples fatally struck 58-year-old Dr. Naji Kayruz with her car on Feb. 4, 2019. Kayruz was riding his bicycle in the bike lane of an Interstate 10 access road when he was struck and killed near the Dominion.

Peoples drove off, but was later arrested after the crash at her home when witnesses helped lead police to her.

After her plea hearing, Peoples broke her nearly 3-year-slience to let her victim’s family know she is deeply remorseful.

“I would like to first and foremost say to the family how terribly sorry I am for all of this,” she said as she became emotional. “I would like for them to know I wasn’t partying. It wasn’t happy hour. I had two TABC investigations done and there was no restaurant or bar that I was at. No celebrating at all.”

Peoples said before the crash, she was dealing with a pressure cooker of a tumultuous week.

Duarte said Peoples had been drinking at the time her husband had kicked her out during an argument.

‘Suspicious’ fire damages East Side Mexican restaurant

San Antonio fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a “suspicious” fire at an East Side restaurant early Tuesday morning.

The fire was called in around 4:15 a.m. at Papis Mexican Restaurant in the 2800 block of East Houston Street, not far from North Walters Street and the AT&T Center.

Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames on the back of the restaurant and a strong smell of accelerant. Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames, fire officials said.

Damage to the restaurant was described as minor. A fire investigation team is now working to figure out the exact cause.

No one was inside the building and no injuries were reported, fire officials said.
