People are booking Airbnb stays in Ukraine. Here’s why.

Melody Goeken booked a five-night stay in the capital of war-ravaged Ukraine for next week. She has no intention of going.

“This was a way I felt I could put cash in someone’s pocket,” she said.

She logged on to Airbnb and searched for a private individual host rather than a corporation. She booked with a man named Baris in Kyiv.

“I followed up with an email to him to please donate those five nights to refugees, or if they are not comfortable with that, they were welcome to keep the money to use for their family,” Goeken said.

Booking on the platform has become a grassroots wave of generosity that’s caught fire on social media. It’s viewed as a way to gift funds fast and personally.

Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky tweeted that in just 48 hours last week, more than 61,000 nights had been booked in Ukraine and that nearly $2 million would be going to hosts in need.

“I can just imagine how they are living and how afraid they are,” Goeken said. “And really, I paid $22 a night, which is nothing. I would have spent that much going out to lunch.”

Baris responded to Goeken’s email thanking her for her kindness, adding a heart emoji.

Airbnb is waiving fees on all bookings in Ukraine so the hosts maximize income.

The company’s non-profit side Airbnb.org is also working to help people around the world host refugees in spare rooms.

SAPD vehicle found abandoned on train tracks, missing license plates and laptop, sources say

A San Antonio Police Department vehicle with its license plates removed and its laptop missing was found abandoned over the weekend on railroad tracks just east of downtown, multiple SAPD sources told the KSAT 12 Defenders.

The vehicle, assigned to the department’s traffic unit and with low-profile SAPD markings on it, was found in the 200 block of Indiana Street, not far from Southtown, sources said.

Its license plates had been removed and its laptop was no longer in the vehicle, sources said.

The officer assigned to the vehicle told investigators he left it parked at the department’s Central Substation Friday evening, with the laptop still inside, and vehicle locator logs confirm that was the vehicle’s location when he signed off.

Investigators, however, now doubt the veracity of parts of the officer’s story as they have attempted to piece together how the SAPD vehicle ended up more than two miles away several hours later, sources said.

As of noon Monday, SAPD media officials had not responded to multiple inquiries about the incident.

Sources identified the officer as a five-year veteran of the department. A city Human Resources official was checking into the officer’s current duty status but it had not provided it as of 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The department is treating the incident so far as a stolen and recovered vehicle, sources said.

This is a developing story, and we’ll bring more updates on KSAT and ksat.com as they become available.
