Vehicle chase in Kirby ends with 4 men arrested by SAPD on West Side, police say

Four men are in police custody following a vehicle chase that began in Kirby and ended with a search on the city’s West Side early Thursday morning, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m., when the Kirby Police Department began pursuing two vehicles that were seen shooting at each other.

That’s when, officials say, the Kirby Police Department eventually ended their pursuit and the San Antonio Police Department’s Eagle helicopter instead followed, tracking them to the city’s West Side. The four men then bailed on their vehicle.

SAPD said the four men tried to hide behind and under a house on Loma Park Drive, not far from NW 36th Street and Culebra Road. Officers arrived at the scene to hear gunshots being fired by the homeowner, who said he saw the men in his backyard and yelled for them to get off his yard.

After the use of police K-9s and drones, the four men were taken into custody by police. The names and ages of the men have not been released. The other vehicle involved in the shooting has not been found, police said.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Woman killed in overnight shooting on East Side, San Antonio police say

San Antonio police are investigating after a woman in her 30s was shot and killed on the city’s East Side early Thursday morning.

Officers were called around 1 a.m. to the 1300 block of Hays Street, not far from North New Braunfels Avenue after receiving word of a shooting.

According to police, several people were hanging out at a street corner after leaving a bar when someone fired a single gunshot. That’s when, police say, the woman was struck by the bullet and killed. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

SAPD said they don’t have much to go on, and do not have a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made.

The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all answered the call.

The name of the woman killed has not been released, pending notification to next of kin.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police said.

San Antonio staff takes action after East Side neighbors complain of problem property

Residents in an East Side neighborhood say a single establishment is to blame for the recent shootings and crimes near their homes, and the city of San Antonio is finally doing something about the problem property.

The establishment on South Hackberry Drexel near East Drexel Avenue used to be a bar called Twin Sisters Cantina but has since become an after-hours hangout spot.

“We feel trapped in our own homes in our own homes. I wake up in the morning. I don’t turn on any of our lights. I leave my alarms set, and I peek through the blinds until I know it’s all clear,” said Anna Hardcastle, who lives in the area.

Hardcastle spoke to KSAT in November when police were called to 100 block of Drexel for a shooting. Officers said two men were walking down the street when someone in a car opened fire on them.

There were 73 police service calls near that location from June to November, 21 of which were for shootings. The other calls were for fighting and disturbances.

After the city looked deeper into the building in question, staff posted a notice to revoke the certificate of occupancy of the establishment on Friday.

Staff stated the building was not safe. They found evidence of gatherings inside, including a cash drawer with money behind the bar. The notice also stated the bar had lost its liquor license in February 2020.

The day after the notice was posted, another shooting took place. Police say two men in the bar were in a confrontation.

The confrontation escalated into the street. One man pulled a gun and shot the other in both legs, police said. The suspect fled the scene, and the victim was stable and taken to Brooke Army Medical Center.

Police are questioning the victim at the hospital to get a description of the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

Hardcastle said, “More needs to be done. That area needs to be fenced off, confined to only the actual property owner.”

A neighbor who wished to remain anonymous said, “There’s no telling what’s going on. You’re just worried about what’s going to happen next.”

KSAT attempted to contact the property owner of the establishment in November. We have not heard back.

Canyon Lake to temporarily close Stilling Basin, Guadalupe Trails parking lots

The Guadalupe Trail and the Stilling Basin parking lots at Canyon Lake will be closed for several months for maintenance work, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

USACE anticipates reopening the parking lots and trails around April 14, 2022.

“We understand large numbers of people use the areas to enjoy the great outdoors, but for the safety of all visitors, including pets enjoying a walk with their owner, we will be restricting access until the work is completed,” announced Canyon Lake Manager, Javier Pérez Ortiz. “Hikers are encouraged to use the Madrone Trail located at Canyon Park. Trout anglers should use the GBRA parking lot to access the river for fishing.”

Canyon Lake staff members ask all visitors to practice leave-no-trace, use designated trash receptacles and always wear a life jacket while boating or anytime in or near the water.

Suspects arrested, cash and drugs seized from South Side gambling operation, Bexar County sheriff says

Several dozen people were detained, and deputies seized drugs and cash from a rental home that was being used as a gambling operation on the South Side, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The bust happened in the 100 block of Tremlett Avenue near South Presa Street in a residential neighborhood on Wednesday night.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the Organized Crime Group executed a search warrant on the 1,500 square-foot gambling operation after they were able to establish a case following months of complaints from neighbors.

Deputies detained several people, with four headed to jail, Salazar said. Those arrested face a variety of gambling-related charges. Salazar said two people were arrested on narcotics felony warrants.

Deputies seized 42 gambling machines, drugs and $3,000 in cash believed to be gambling proceeds.

KSAT will update you with the latest developments on this case as more information becomes available.
