16-foot ‘Stargazer’ sculpture debuts on downtown San Antonio’s River Walk

The City of San Antonio has unveiled the 16-foot “Stargazer (Citlali)” sculpture in the heart of the River Walk.

“Stargazer (Citlali),” from Mexican artist Pedro Reyes, is located on the river at the fork between The Shops at Rivercenter and Henry B. González Convention Center.

It’s not easy to miss — the sculpture consists of a seated woman holding up a marble star in between her fingers while gazing at it. The woman was made with more than 80 pieces of Mexican volcanic stone, officials said in a news release on Monday.

The piece was placed on a 5-foot-tall base, so she towers over the busy intersection.

“I wanted to offer a work that transcends the relatively recent borders and boundaries we know today to offer an ageless perspective in celebration of San Antonio’s more than three hundred years of distinctive history and culture,” Reyes said in the release.

“The star could be a star like the ones that shine over San Antonio each night — the same ones that have been contemplated by all peoples throughout the region’s human history, the same ones that inspire awe and wonder as they help us glimpse our place in relation to the universe and to time.”

The release added that “Citlali” means “star” in Nauhatl, the indigenous language of Mexico City, which is Reyes’ hometown.

This is the latest installation in the River Walk Public Art Garden, which includes “Bloom” and “Green Spaces at Market Street.”

“The River Walk Public Art Garden has been an extensive, multi-year project that celebrates the spirit of connection with artworks by several San Antonio Artists intermingled with pieces by international artists,” Krystal Jones, the interim executive director of the Department of Arts & Culture, said in the release.

Jones added that the installation “continues to help redefine the River Walk experience as a global public art destination.”

The average price of gas in the U.S. has surpassed $4 per gallon for the first time since 2008.

That year saw the highest gas prices on record, but we’re getting close to breaking that record.

According to AAA, the average price of gas has gone up more than 45 cents in the last week, putting Monday’s average at $4.065 per gallon for regular unleaded gas.

It’s no surprise that California has the highest average of any state at $5.343 a gallon. Missouri has the lowest average at $3.627.

Texas among the states with the lowest average gas prices at $3.726 and San Antonio is even lower than the state average at $3.618.

But all of those records are close to getting broken.

We’re less than five cents away from breaking the national record, about 25 cents away from breaking the state record and about 34 cents from the record high in San Antonio.

Here are three charts comparing gas prices on March 7 compared to prices in the past:

Find more news on KSAT’s Fiesta page.

In less than a month, Fiesta is set to make its full triumphant springtime return to San Antonio for the first time since 2019.

The coronavirus pandemic shuttered plans for Fiesta in 2020 and the dates were pushed back in 2021 to the summer, with several major event cancellations — including the Fiesta Flambeau and Battle of Flowers parades.

But this year, the 11-day party with a purpose is returning in full force and KSAT 12 has plenty of coverage planned for Fiesta fans.

Fiesta is San Antonio’s largest annual event and it generates more than $340 million in economic impact for the community while giving more than 100 nonprofit organizations an opportunity to raise money through a multitude of events.

KSAT will be airing the following Fiesta events live on KSAT 12, KSAT Plus (our free streaming app) and on KSAT.com:

The parades will start on Main Street near San Antonio College and head south toward Crockett Park, where there will be bleacher seating.

The parade will veer off onto Lexington, by Madison Square Park and turn left on St. Mary’s Street before heading right on Brooklyn, where there will be additional bleacher seating.

The route will continue to Avenue E and make a quick right onto Houston Street and then a quick left to Alamo Plaza before turning right onto Commerce Street where the parade will end.

Texas Cavaliers River Parade

This year’s Texas Cavaliers River Parade will mark the 77th year the annual Fiesta event takes place.

Tickets are on sale from $18-$28 along the route and all proceeds benefit more than 70 children’s charities annually.

Battle of Flowers

The Battle of Flowers parade is considered the founding event of Fiesta San Antonio. The parade has run through the streets of San Antonio every year since 1891, except during World Wars I and II and during 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Battle of Flowers is also the oldest parade in the nation that’s produced entirely by women, according to Fiesta San Antonio.

Tickets for seating can be purchased for $16.50-$35 at BattleOfFlowers.org. Proceeds benefit local charities.

Fiesta Flambeau

Fiesta Flambeau, which originated in 1948, is considered to be the largest illuminated night parade in the U.S.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Literary Classics” and tickets for bleacher seating will be available for $20-$35.

Schertz police still searching for Jacob Dubois, who disappeared 1 year ago

Police in Schertz are still searching for Jacob Dubois and actively seeking information on his disappearance a year later.

Dubois was last seen at his Schertz home on March 7, 2021, when he told his girlfriend that he was going to meet up with a friend named Ethan Beckman.

Dubois never returned home, and the case turned into a murder investigation. No one has been charged with murder, but Beckman was jailed on a charge of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence on March 29, police previously said.

If Dubois is still alive, he would be 23 years old.

With his whereabouts still unknown, his family and the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for tips and information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information about Dubois’ disappearance is asked to contact Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 877-403-TIPS (8477). They can also submit tips online at www.gccsTIPS.com or use the P3 Tips app.

Dubois was reported missing on March 8 after he did not return home from meeting with Beckman.

When police called Beckman, he told police that they drove to a construction site near Dubois’ home, and Dubois said he was going to walk home.

Officers spoke with Beckman again on March 10, and he “continued to give conflicting stories” about where they went, police said in a news release.

Police later found out that Beckman was involved in a collision on March 8, and he abandoned his 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GTI near Highway 281 and Johnson Way.

The vehicle was seized, and officers discovered that it appeared someone tried to clean the interior of the car. The floorboard was soaked with water and the presence of blood was found near the passenger’s seat, police said.

A warrant for Beckman’s arrest on the tampering with evidence charge was issued in March 2021.

Police believe Dubois is missing due to foul play.
