Suspect accused of fatally shooting man during argument on North Side
A man has been arrested for fatally shooting another man during an argument on the North Side last month, according to authorities.
Bexar County Jail records show that Kyle Jones, 35, was charged with murder and booked on Sunday.
San Antonio police said Jones and another man, Jerome Johns, had an argument on the morning of Feb. 21 outside an apartment complex in the 9500 block of Lorene.
At some point during the dispute, Jones shot Johns, police said.
Johns was found with a gunshot wound in the middle of the street and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An arrest warrant affidavit states that witnesses helped identify the suspect, but it did not say what the two men were arguing about.
Jail records show Jones is also facing charges of possession, unlawful carrying of a weapon and failure to identify himself. His bond is set at $515,600, records show.

A male driver is dead following a vehicle crash with an 18-wheeler on Loop 410 early Monday morning, San Antonio police said.
The crash occurred around 3:45 a.m. on Loop 410 southbound, near the Pearsall Road exit.
According to police, the man was driving a dark-colored sport utility vehicle when it slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler that had pulled off onto the side of the highway.
Police said the driver became pinned inside the SUV under the back of the 18-wheeler. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, the cause of the crash is not currently known. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt.
SAPD did not give an age for the man that died or say if alcohol played a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
Family of man who was fatally struck by SAPD patrol car speaks out
A pedestrian is dead after a San Antonio police officer struck him with a patrol vehicle while responding to a call on the West Side, according to SAPD.
The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6100 block of W Commerce Street and NW 39th Street.
According to police, the pedestrian — a 62-year-old man– was wearing dark clothing while crossing the street and didn’t yield to traffic.
The victim was later identified by family as Feliciano Jimenez, or better known as Leo. Leo’s niece, Belinda Herrera, told KSAT12 they have been calling for more safety measures in the area for months.
“It’s hard because I never thought it was going to be one of my family members that was going to pass away there and the way he passed away was awful,” said Herrera. “There’s no stripes there, no crosswalk. they’re playing roulette there. We don’t need no more people to die there, we don’t want other people to go through what we’re going through.”
According to a public information officer for SAPD, the on-duty officer was heading east on W. Commerce, responding to a call for a fight and couldn’t see the pedestrian in the roadway due to poor lighting.
We reached out to councilwoman Terri Castillo about safety concerns and lack of lighting in the area of the intersection in question. KSAT12 was sent this statement:
“I am saddened to hear of the death that took place on Saturday night. We lost a member of our District 5 community. I have talked with some of his family, and we are working to find answers. We do know someone died and this person was loved by his family and community. I am working to get more information from the San Antonio Police Department. I will also work with our Public Works Department to find ways to make West Commerce and NW 39th Street safer for our community. This man’s family deserves answers and accountability. I will work with them and our community to ensure that we find those.”
Authorities said the pedestrian got hit by the officer’s patrol vehicle and he landed in a grassy area. The officer stopped his vehicle, notified 911 and went to help the man.
The officer involved is a two-year veteran with the police department. Police have two investigations open. One is criminal and the other is administrative.
San Antonio woman remembers Ukrainian man who helped facilitate hundreds of adoptions
On the city’s Northeast Side, there’s never a quiet moment in the Barnett household. However, with eight children, that’s to be expected.
“Copeland was our first adoption, and we adopted him at birth in 2002,” Stephanie Barnett, mom to all of the children said. Next came Silas.
“We adopted him from Texas Foster Care, and we got him in the summer of 2008,” Barnett said.
Those were Stephanie’s U.S. adoptions.
These are just three of Stephanie Barnett’s adopted children. Six are from Ukraine and two are from the U.S. Stephanie tells me her adoptions through Ukraine wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for one man…Serge Zevlever. pic.twitter.com/JgmjbrBc14

“October of 2011, we landed on U.S. soil with Teague, Trenton and McClain. End of March 2015, landed on U.S. soil with Bowen, Chesnie, and Rawlen,” Stephanie explained.
She lovingly named her other children, all of whom were adopted from Ukraine.
“We found out about the plight of orphans with special needs in different countries around the world,” she said.
All six of her Ukrainian children have Down Syndrome, as does her son Silas.
Stephanie explains their family has one man to thank for facilitating the adoptions of her Ukrainian children, or as she affectionately calls them, her Ukies.
“His name is Serge Zevlever,” Stephanie said.
She explains Zevlever has dual citizenship between his home country of Ukraine and the U.S.
When he became a U.S. citizen, Serge joined the military and served during Desert Storm.
“His heart is in adoption, specifically children with special needs,” Stephanie said.
For decades, Zevlever has gone to orphanages and helped pair kids with loving homes. When fighting broke out in Ukraine, he knew he couldn’t leave.
“That’s what he gave his breath, his life for,” Stephanie said.
According to Serge’s family, he helped get a U.S. family across the Ukrainian border to Poland last Friday and then returned to Kyiv to fight. Serge was killed the next day.
“Our children would not be here and all of the other children would not be here because of Serge,” Stephanie said with tears in her eyes.
The man affectionately called “papa” by so many orphans was gunned down in a war to protect the country he loved.
“This man, what a hero, he gave his life. You know, he literally laid his life down,” she said.
Stephanie and her husband David are two of the many heartbroken over Serge’s death, but they have seen a silver lining.
His story has been shared on social media, over and over, which is putting a spotlight on international adoptions of children with special needs.
One organization that Serge was active in was Reece’s Rainbow; which according to their website, ”advocates and finds families for orphans internationally with Down syndrome and other special needs.”

Man arrested for child sex crime 2 days before starting job as temporary Bexar County jailer, BCSO says
A 20-year-old man was arrested on an active warrant for a child sex crime two days before he was scheduled to start working at the Bexar County Jail, according to authorities.
Alucard Harris was wanted for online solicitation of a minor with intent for sexual contact. He was arrested Saturday but was slated to start his job as a temporary jailer on Monday.
Deputies were called to a home in far West Bexar County for “an outcry of sexual assault involving a minor,” a news release stated. Upon further investigation, deputies said the victim identified Harris through the social media app Snapchat, which officials said he used to communicate with her.
As the investigation unfolded, deputies later learned that Harris had applied for a job with BCSO. As a result of his arrest, officials said his conditional offer of employment will be withdrawn.
Harris is being held in the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
BCSO Child Safe Investigators are working the investigation, and anyone with information on other potential victims is urged to contact BCSO at 210-335-6070 or via email at BCSOTIPS@bexar.org.
