2 dead, 1 critically injured after fiery crash in La Vernia, DPS officials say

Two men are dead and another man is in critical condition after a fiery crash in La Vernia, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon on US Highway 87 West and County Road 361.

Officials said a Ford F-150 truck was heading southbound when it tried to pass another vehicle. However, the driver of the truck lost control and hit an oncoming Ford pickup truck.

Both of the trucks went up in flames due to the impact and both drivers died at the scene, according to DPS. The drivers have been identified as Jordan Williamson, of Cibolo, and Kenneth Boyd, of Richardson.

Another man was inside of the Ford pickup driven by Boyd, and was taken to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in critical condition.

Officials said it’s unclear if speed was a factor in the crash and the investigation continues.

2 former SAPD officers charged with assault released on bond from Bexar County Jail, records show

Two former San Antonio police officers are out on bond from the Bexar County Jail after they were charged with aggravated assault, court records show.

Carlos Castro and Thomas Villarreal were arrested Friday but have since been released on $25,000 bond each. The two men were fired from SAPD last year due to excessive use of force.

On Wednesday, Castro and Villarreal were indicted by a Bexar County grand jury. They are charged with aggravated assault by a public servant, a first-degree felony, sources confirmed on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Jan. 16, 2020, during the arrest of Eric Wilson, who was taken into custody on suspicion of evading arrest and possession of a controlled substance. Court records showed both charges were dismissed later that year because Wilson was already serving time in federal prison on drug charges.

That night, officers pulled over a car that was traveling 48 mph on North Walters Street, where the speed limit is 35 mph. The car also failed to signal prior to turning onto Lamar Street, police said.

Officers activated their emergency lights and approached the car, which had pulled into a driveway.

Eric Wilson, who was driving the car, got out of the vehicle and walked away from officers, who noted that the vehicle was emitting a strong odor of marijuana, according to the police report.

Another man, Eddie Wilson, came out of the house to talk to the officers, according to the report. Officers told Eddie Wilson to stay away and warned him of hindering their arrest of Eric Wilson, according to the report.

As officers detained Eddie Wilson, Eric Wilson walked into the home and closed the door on the police officers, according to the police report.

Villarreal and Castro kicked in the door “in an attempt to force their way in,” according to the suspension document. The officers “entered a private residence without consent, without a warrant and without exigent circumstances for the purposes of effecting a misdemeanor arrest,” administrators wrote.

The officers said when they got inside the home, Eric Wilson continued to resist arrest, so Villarreal unsuccessfully deployed his taser, according to the police report.

As officers struggled with the suspect, Castro and Villarreal feared Eric Wilson might reach for a weapon, so they punched him repeatedly until they were able to handcuff him. Both officers had Eric Wilson’s blood on their bodies, according to the police report. Villarreal sustained a bruised hand from the incident.

In Eric Wilson’s mugshot, injuries were visible around both of his eyes.

Eric Wilson has a long criminal history in Bexar County, dating back to 1988, according to court records, including a murder conviction in 1988. At the time of his arrest, Wilson was on federal probation, according to the police report.

Villarreal and Castro were fired in July 2020 after their conduct was investigated by the department’s internal affairs unit.

“Excessive use of force will not be tolerated within this department. The actions that these four officers showed on two separate incidents are indefensible and do not align with our use of force policy, de-escalation tactics, and our guiding principles,” Police Chief William McManus said shortly after the officers were fired. “SAPD will continue to hold its officers to the highest standard of conduct and impose discipline when warranted in order to maintain the trust and confidence of our community.”

If convicted, the former officers could face up to life in prison.

Construction begins on Texas-Mexico border wall in Rio Grande City

The construction of the Texas-Mexico border wall in Rio Grande City has officially begun, just six months after Gov. Greg Abbott announced the state would build its own border wall.

The first phase of the wall is being built on state land managed by the Texas General Land Office.

The governor made the announcement Saturday afternoon during a press conference at the construction site. He was joined by GLO Commissioner George P. Bus and Texas Facilities Commission (TFC) Chairman Steven Alvis.

Sen. Kelly Hancock, Rep. James White, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw, and Texas Military Department Adjutant General Tracy Norris and Deputy Adjutant General Monie Ulis were also in attendance.

In mid-June, the governor, who has openly spoken about his criticism of President Biden’s immigration policies, announced the state’s plan for the border wall. He pledged $250 million in state funds to launch the project.

“The State of Texas has taken comprehensive action to secure our southern border and address the border crisis while President Biden has sat idly by,” said Gov. Abbott. “In June, I promised Texans that we would step up in the federal government’s absence and build our own border wall. We have wasted no time in the six months since that promise was made, and I am proud to announce that construction of the Texas border wall is now underway. Today not only represents the first phase of the Texas border wall, but it also serves as a major milestone in our efforts to combat illegal immigration, stop the smuggling of drugs and people, and keep our communities safe.”

Abbott also directed the TFC to hire a program manager to oversee its construction. In September, that manager was selected.

Gov. Abbott signed House Bill 9 into law that month as well, providing an additional $1.8 billion in state funding for border security, including border wall construction.

WATCH LIVE: Gov. Abbott to debut Texas border wall construction in Rio Grande City

Gov. Greg Abbott is holding a press briefing to debut the Texas border wall construction in Rio Grande City, along the Texas-Mexico border.

The press briefing is set to begin at 12 p.m., Saturday, at the construction site and will be livestreamed in the video player above.

According to a news release, the governor will be accompanied by Texas General Land Office (GLO) Commissioner George P. Bush, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steve McCraw, Texas Military Department (TMD) Adjutant General Tracy Norris, TMD Deputy Adjutant General Monie Ulis, Texas Facilities Commission (TFC) Executive Director Mike Novak, State Senator Kelly Hancock, Representatives James White and Ryan Guillen, and Starr County Sheriff Rene “Orta” Fuentes.

Abbott has been very vocal about his disagreement with President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, and last month, he ordered the creation of a “steel wall” with 20 shipping containers in Eagle Pass to prevent migrants from crossing over.

The containers stretched along the Texas side of the Rio Grande that passes directly under the Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras International Bridge, where thousands of Haitian migrants gathered in September for several days, seeking asylum.

We’ll bring more updates to this story as they become available.

Let’s Make a Deal! How To Be a Successful Negotiator

One million dollars— that is the amount of income someone can lose over a lifetime if they don’t negotiate their salary, according to Carnegie Mellon University. This is especially true for women. So, how can you improve your negotiation skills?

At the store, at home, and at the office… we do a lot of negotiating every day in our lives. But how successful are you?

Joel Garris, the CEO of Nelson Financial, advises, “When you give a range, make sure the lower end of that range is the number you’re likely to accept, otherwise you wind up negotiating against yourself.”

So, what can you do to up your negotiating skills? First, you need to prepare. Consider how will the other person respond, what objections could they have and how can you respond to those objections. Practice your responses with a friend or mentor.

“Make sure it’s a conversation you’re having face-to-face. Not on an email basis, I think too many people think they can just email and ask, when there’s a lot of back and forth in a conversation about negotiating your salary.” Garris states.

Also, timing is everything. If you are feeling anxious or tired, you are more likely to make deals that are less financially advantageous. Making sure you don’t leave the negotiating table empty handed.

While negotiating, you also want to listen more than you talk. Listen to the answers to your questions. This can provide information to boost your counteroffer. When you do speak up, don’t just talk about what the increase in salary will do for you, but what you can do for your company as well.
