San Antonio organizations work fast to get people off the streets before the freeze
As temperatures continue to drop, conditions for people experiencing homelessness are getting more dangerous.
Christian Assistance Ministries along with numerous other organizations and nonprofits hit the streets on Sunday to try and get as many people as they could out of the cold and into a shelter.
“Not one person is left out in this cold that wants to get out of the freezing weather. As cold as it’s going to get (Sunday night) it’s going to be painful and threatening to their life” said Valerie Salas, director of homeless services for Christian Assistance Ministries, or CAM.
After the organization game planned and packed supplies, they hit the streets. KSAT followed Salas all through downtown as she stopped at numerous homeless encampments. Other volunteers took other parts of town.
They’d ask people if they needed rides to a shelter. If yes, they’d provide transportation. If people said no, they’d give them hand warmers, blankets and coats to try and stay warm. They believe they placed about 80 people in shelters, but the majority chose to stay where they were.
“It’s super hard when that answer is ‘no’ and you want it more than that person does but we’re just going to love them until they say ‘yes,’” Salas said.
Sunday’s work was made much easier thanks to a brand new app. The Weather Shelter Coalition app was made to ease some of the difficulties the volunteers had faced in last year’s winter storm. The pastor of the Life Restored Church, Alex Fleming, got with designers to make the app a reality.

10 high-profile trials expected in 2022
Bexar County courts will get a delayed start to the year again in 2022 due to the latest coronavirus surge.
Hundreds of trials have been delayed since 2020, including several high-profile cases, as courts have been forced to close and operate on a limited basis.
Once jury trials do return — for now, that could be as early as late January — the courthouse will be busy moving through the backlog.
That includes at least 10 major trials we will be following and expect to take place in 2022:
1) Andre McDonald
This is a trial that was expected to begin in fall 2021 but because of some late evidence that was given to the district attorney’s office by the sheriff’s office, it has been delayed.
Andre McDonald is accused of the 2019 murder of his wife Andreen McDonald. If found guilty he is facing 5 to 99 years or life in prison.
During his last hearing, his bond was reduced and he has since bonded out of jail.
2) Emond Johnson
Another high-profile case we are likely to see play out in court in 2022 is the trial of Emond Johnson.
Johnson allegedly set fire to his gym that spread to other businesses and killed San Antonio firefighter Scott Deem.
Investigators believe Johnson intentionally set the fire because he was behind on paying rent and was about to lose the lease on his gym.
This trial is expected to begin at the end of March.
3) Anton Harris
Known as the “Medical Center Rapist,” Anton Harris still has trials pending.
Right before the pandemic in 2020, Harris was found guilty and sentenced to 99 years in prison on an aggravated sexual assault charge and 60 years in prison on an aggravated robbery charge.
There is still another aggravated sexual assault case pending and no word yet if it will go to trial or if Harris will take a plea deal.
His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 18.
4) Andrew Elizondo
Andrew Elizondo is accused of fatally shooting a 6-year-old girl as her mother drove away from a car club gathering on Mother’s Day this year.
While Elizondo has a hearing scheduled on Jan. 10 he won’t probably go to trial until maybe late 2022.
5) Damion Campbell
At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, police say 42-year old Damion Campbell walked inside a Diesel barbershop on Bandera Road near Loop 1604 and attacked three staff members inside.
Helle Jae O’Regan was killed in that attack and Campbell is now facing a murder charge for her death.
Campbell’s next court hearing is Jan. 28 and a trial date could be set during that hearing.
6) Eric Trevino
Eric Trevino is charged with capital murder in the death of 3-year-old Rene Blancas Jr. in 2017.
Blancas was riding in his family’s vehicle when someone fired a shot at the car at Briggs Avenue and New Laredo Highway, striking the boy, police said.
While awaiting trial, Trevino escaped from jail and is also facing a felony charge for that.
According to court records, his trial date is set for Feb. 22.
7) Juan David Ortiz
Juan David Ortiz is accused of killing four women in Webb County in 2018.
The former border patrol agent is facing capital murder and aggravated assault charges.
His trial is expected to begin in April and take place in Laredo.
8) Mark Howerton
A retrial for Mark Howerton was expected to take place in 2021 but his attorneys filed a motion to bar his retrial, citing prosecutor misconduct and double jeopardy after his 2019 trial ended in a hung jury.
Howerton is accused of the death of Trinity University cheerleader Cayley Mandadi.
The judge on this case has yet to rule on this motion but will probably do so in 2022.
Read more here.
9) Jose Baldemero Flores
In 2017, Jose Baldemero Flores was indicted on two capital murder charges and arson in connection with the deaths of two women.
The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office said Flores sexually assaulted and killed Esmeralda Herrera in 2011 and Heather Willms in 2005.
He was arrested in 2011 in Herrera’s slaying, but the case was rejected for further investigation.
The DA’s Office reopened the case in 2015, collaborating with police and Texas Rangers on the investigation, which led to Flores’ arrest in November 2016.
This trial is expected to take place in 2022 but no date has been set yet.
10) Sherry Lee Marburger
Sherry Lee Marburger is charged with the 2020 murder of her husband, who was a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
Marburger is accused of shooting him in the hotel they were staying at.
According to police, Marburger called 911 to report the shooting and told the dispatcher she’d shot her husband in the chest for ‘cheating.’
This case is expected to go to trial in 2022 but no date has been set yet.

SAPD searching for gunmen who shot 2 men, tied up 1 man at Northwest Side home
San Antonio police are searching for two men who showed up at a Northwest Side home, shot two people and tied up another person early Monday morning.
A man told police that he and two other men were inside a home in the 2100 block of Clower, near West Avenue and Interstate 10, when two men showed up and banged on the door.
The men were asking for someone by name, he told police. They ended up restraining one man with Zip ties and throwing him out of the house.
The men then shot the two other men who were inside the home, police said.
The restrained man was able to make it to his feet and run to a neighbor’s home to call for help just before 5 a.m.
The two gunmen fled in a silver Jeep, police said, and officers are searching for them by helicopter.
The shooting victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as more information becomes available.

San Antonio woman battling breast cancer gets surprise from Dak Prescott
The Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday was emotional for one San Antonio woman, and not just because the team lost.
Cancer patient Brandy Weaver is a big-time fan who thought she was just at a Cowboys watch party at a Dave and Buster’s.
However, the reality was so much better.
Y’all this story tonight, have your tissues READY! Brandy Weaver is battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, a hard diagnosis for the mom of 2. Her friend Eloise coordinated an incredible surprise from a special @dallascowboys player. pic.twitter.com/9ST5lkrEAV
— Leigh Waldman (@LeighWaldman) January 2, 2022
The crowd inside of a private watch party room at the restaurant and entertainment center was fired up.
“I’ve been a diehard Cowboys fan since I was a little girl. I grew up watching them,” Brandy said.
She thought the gathering was just about watching the game with the best group of Cowboys fans she knows because that’s what her good friend Eloise Hudson said it was.
“How can I get her with her friends all together in one group. And I thought, well to watch a Cowboys game, that’s appropriate,” Hudson, the surprise organizer, said.
It’s especially appropriate given Brandy’s love of QB Dak Prescott.
”I believe his mom has breast cancer and I do too, so I connect on that level with him. And I think he’s just a good motivator to his other teammates,” Brandy said.
What Brandy didn’t know is Eloise made up a contest that KSAT sponsored and we played along.
She had something special in store for Brandy at halftime.
“What’s up, Brandy, it’s Dak Prescott quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. I got wind that you just had your 40th birthday so I wanted to wish you a happy belated birthday but more importantly, heard about the fighter you are,” Dak Prescott said over a recorded video.
Her reaction was priceless.
“He mentioned my name and wished me well,” Brandy said with delight.
But there was more.
“In here is a check that’s going to cover your deductible for the year of 2022,” Erin Ercoline, the executive director of Thrivewell, a local nonprofit that supports cancer fighters like Brandy, said.
“We know for her, just lifting the burden that comes along with this diagnosis, if we can make it easier at any step of the journey we want to do that,” Ercoline added.
Since 2017, Brandy has been battling breast cancer. She’s only spent nine months in remission; however, her latest diagnosis is her hardest.
“My new life is that it is stage four, it’s in my bones, my brain, my pancreas, and my liver,” Brandy said.
It’s a day-by-day battle, but it’s made easier through support from family, friends, and the Cowboys, especially Dak Prescott.
“Wish you the best, tell you to continue to keep fighting, being strong,” Prescott said over video.
“This made my day, made my week, made my month,” Brandy said.
“Did it make your new year?” I asked.
“Oh, it made my new year, yes,” she replied.
Throughout her years battling breast cancer, Brandy has set goals for herself. Her last goal was to make it to 40 and she did that.
Her new goal is to take her kids Whitney and William to Disney World in March.

San Antonio nonprofit joins in search for missing 3-year-old Lina Khil as investigation enters third week
Members of a San Antonio nonprofit organization and several community members gathered Sunday to help locate missing 3-year-old Lina Sardar Khil, as the search enters its third week.
Lina was first reported missing on the evening of Dec. 20 after she was last seen at the Villa Del Cabo apartment complex, located in the 9400 block of Fredericksburg Road. At the time she disappeared, she was wearing a black jacket, red dress and black shoes.
The Eagles Flight Advocacy & Outreach organization and an estimated 150 people in the Afghan community joined forces at 9 a.m. Sunday to search for Lina in the greenbelt area behind St. George Maronite Catholic Church on Babcock Road.
Despite their efforts, Lina’s whereabouts are still unknown. By Sunday afternoon, law enforcement issued a 13th Amber Alert in her disappearance.
Various resources have already been poured into the search, and a hefty reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers and The Islamic Center of San Antonio for any tips that help uncover what happened to Lina.
Police and FBI agents are partnering in the investigation, and so far, they’ve searched greenbelts on the Northwest Side with K9 units, interviewed witnesses, sifted through surveillance footage, and more, though leads are still slim.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus did allude last week that there could be possible suspects connected to her disappearance, but details are limited.
“I will say that we’re looking at some people, yes, but I won’t get into it deeper than that,” McManus previously said.
In the meantime, police are continuing to treat Lina’s disappearance as a missing persons case and not an abduction.
Here’s what else we know about the search for Lina as of Sunday, Jan. 2:
SAPD asks for public’s help, tips to aid in search for Lina Khil
San Antonio police are asking for specific people to reach out to its Missing Persons Unit to help aid in the search for Lina.
Any residents who were at the Villas del Cabo Apartment Complex, which is located at 9400 Fredericksburg Road, between 4:30 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, are urged to contact SAPD at 210-207-7660 with “actionable tips.”
Also, anyone who spoke with Lina or her family at any time on Monday is urged to contact the police as soon as possible.
“No detail is too small as we continue to search for Lina,” SAPD said in a release.
Although the police presence at the family’s home looked different during the holiday, the department said their resources to aid in the search for Lina are being redirected “to be as proactive as possible.”
Police are treating the disappearance as a missing person case, not an abduction
Though San Antonio police asked the FBI to deploy its child abduction rapid response team to aid officers in their search, SAPD Chief William McManus clarified that investigators do not have any reason to believe Lina was abducted.
“If it were an abduction, we could be looking for an individual or have evidence of a child being abducted,” McManus said on Wednesday. “Right now, we don’t have any of that. That may change, but right now, it’s still a missing person.”
Another reason they are treating it as a missing person case is that there is not currently a suspect, he said.
SAPD has used canines in the search, which is still contained to the San Antonio area.
But the FBI’s rapid response team has resources that the department doesn’t, McManus said.
“If we have video that’s not real clear, they can work on their end to clarify any video footage,” he said. “They have resources, they have boots on the ground here that are helping us canvas the area.”
FBI agents have been seen knocking on residents doors, as well as checking in with nearby businesses.
“FBI showed up and they searched my apartment. They looked under the bed, under the couch outside They had this questionnaire. Going through questions, ‘Would you be willing to give a DNA sample if needed?’” said an apartment resident who did not want to be identified.
Alex de Hoyos, manager of the Belden’s Automotive across the street from the apartment complex, said he gave authorities the store’s security video on Monday.
The store’s cameras can see the entire entrance of the Villa Del Cabo complex, de Hoyos said, unfortunately, his cameras can’t see the side entrance of the apartments.
“Guy in plain clothes comes inside and flaps a badge and tells us what’s going on, and we were like, ‘Oh yeah, come on down. We’ll give you anything you need,” de Hoyos said.
Officers continued searching areas surrounding the apartment complex on Thursday, but as time passes, so do their chances of finding Lina.
“The longer the time lapses, the less hopeful we become,” McManus said.
Muslim community, Crime Stoppers offer $150K reward combined for information on Lina
The Islamic Center of San Antonio and Crime Stoppers are offering hefty rewards for information that leads to the arrest of a suspect involved in the disappearance of 3-year-old Lina Khil.
A cash reward was put up by the Islamic Center of San Antonio on Wednesday, Dec. 22. It initially started out as a $10,000 reward before multiple donations were received, totaling $100,000 on Thursday, Dec. 23.
Crime Stoppers also announced late Thursday, Dec. 23 it is also offering a reward of $50,000. Both rewards combined total $150,000, if the tip helps lead authorities to the young girl, and an arrest.
Lina and her family are refugees from Afghanistan
Margaret Constantino with the Center for Refugee Services told KSAT that the child’s family is among the Afghanistan refugees in San Antonio.
At least 1,300 people from Afghanistan have come through the Center for Refugee Services for resettling here.
While she knows very little about the family, including when exactly they came to the United States, Constantino says any missing child is everyone’s missing child.
“And like any big family with lots and lots of little kids, all of these children are precious to us,” she said. “Knowing this community, they’re very close-knit. So people will be out there beating the bushes, looking for this child.”
Lina disappeared at a playground
Lina was at a playground at the apartment complex with her mother and other children between 5-6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, when her mother left and returned to find her daughter missing, the chief previously said.
It is unclear exactly how long the mother was away, but McManus said she returned a “short time later.” McManus said the girl wasn’t left alone and there were other kids at the playground, which is open within the complex.
The family reported the child missing around 7:15 p.m., and an AMBER Alert was issued.
Officers searched the area by foot and air that day but did not locate her. SAPD continued their search in the week and asked the FBI for assistance.
Officers went door by door to each apartment — there are under 300 units in the complex — to search for Lina.
Officers also searched for video, checked cars and dumpsters, and recorded license plates due to the “suspicious nature of the disappearance,” he added.
“We have every available asset in the police department working on the case right now,” he said, adding that “we are sparing no assets or resources.”
So far, the mother and residents have been cooperative, McManus said.
“Nobody comes and goes without talking to a police officer,” he said.
Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call SAPD’s missing person unit at 210-207-7660.

It’s raining…fish? One East Texas town says rare weather phenomon happened to them
You’ve heard the saying, “It’s raining cats and dogs,” but have you ever heard, “it’s raining fish?” That’s what one East Texas town said after a rare weather phenomenon happened to them last week.
According to an image shared by the City of Texarkana’s Facebook page, some residents had small fish raining down on them on Dec. 29.
“2021 is pulling out all the tricks… including raining fish in Texarkana today. And no, this isn’t a joke,” city officials said in the post.
It happens because of a weather phenomenon called “animal rain.” According to National Geographic, animal rain occurs when small animals get swept up in waterspouts or updrafts and then fall back to Earth with raindrops.
National Geographic said bats, fish, snakes, birds, frogs, and jellies have all been reported to have rained down on Earth.
As the waterspouts and updrafts move over land, they lose their energy and are forced to dump their heavy loads, National Geographic said.
The heaviest objects get dumped first and the lighter objects are dumped last— which explains why usually only one type of animal is raining down.
