Women shot on Interstate 35 near downtown after leaving bar, SAPD says

Two women traveling on Interstate 35 near downtown overnight were shot while heading home from a bar, San Antonio police said.

They were traveling southbound on I-35 near Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday when a vehicle pulled up beside them and opened fire, police said.

The driver and the passenger, both women ages 37 and 24, were shot in their arms. The driver exited the highway and pulled into a parking lot on Frio Street, where they called the police.

They were both taken to University Hospital and Brooke Army Medical Center in stable condition.

The suspect vehicle kept going, and the victims said it was a silver, four-door sedan, according to SAPD.

The women told police that they were at the Studio 55 bar at Loop 410 and Evers Road, and a disturbance occurred with someone they knew. Police said the women were giving conflicting stories.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Class ring returned to San Antonio woman after it was stolen 18 years ago

This year was an unforgettable Christmas for a local woman who was reunited with her class ring after it was stolen 18 years ago.

Social media helped Norah Constantino’s journey and showed why this ring means so much to her and her family.

“Oh my gosh, it’s so dainty. It doesn’t fit, right? But this is amazing. My gosh,” Constantino said.

The moment was captured just outside of Southside High School where Constantino was re-gifted her class ring of 1989.

Everyone’s class ring has memories, a sense of accomplishment. But for Norah, her ring means so much more.

“My mom passed away in 2003 from breast cancer, and a couple of months later my house was broken into and stuff that was taken from my house was my jewelry from my jewelry box. And part of that joy was my class ring,” Constantino said.

This emotional reunion was thanks to the kindness of others. The Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union found the ring, Googled the high school and the name, and made the call.

“I got my class ring back after 18 years. It’s finally back,” Constantino said.

Norah is also working to find the rightful owner of another class ring her parents found years ago.

“I just want to pay it forward and hopefully it gets to the right owner like mine did to me,” Constantino said.

She understands a class ring can mean so much more than just a graduation. And, while Constantino works to find the person who is missing this ring, she wants her story to help others.

“Let people know there are good people out there and hopefully it sparks others to do good,” Constantino said.

George Strait’s exclusive Dominion estate has officially been sold

George Strait’s Dominion compound has officially been sold and taken off the housing market, according to the listing on Realtor.com.

The property, located in a guard-gated neighborhood at 10 Davenport Lane, was previously listed at $7.5 million, but has gone through several price changes since it was listed a few years ago.

It’s unclear how much the home actually sold for; however, according to Mansion Global, it was purchased by Shannon Ralston, the founder and CEO of Angel Staffing — a company that services medical facilities statewide.

The home sits on 12.2 acres and is built in the Santa Fe style with imported adobe and 14 hand-sculpted fireplaces.

Despite being almost 8,000 square feet, it has just three bedrooms but a detached casita offers a fourth bedroom.

According to the listing, there are 6 and a half bathrooms and custom-designed features from artist Bill Tull throughout the property.

Man arrested for intoxication assault after crash sends child, 2 adults to hospital, SAPD says

A 33-year-old man is charged with intoxication assault after a West Side crash sent a 2-year-old child and two adults to an area hospital, according to San Antonio police.

Gerardo Lozano was booked for three counts of intoxication assault, according to SAPD.

The crash happened just after 8:30 p.m. Friday near 38th Street and Amires Place.

Police said an SUV, driven by Lozano, was heading northbound on 38th and ran a stop sign, crashing into a pickup truck that was traveling eastbound on Amires.

The impact forced the truck, carrying a pregnant woman and her 2-year-old child, across the intersection and into a two-foot-tall retaining wall on the northeast corner of the intersection, according to SAPD.

The people in the truck, including the child, were taken by EMS to University Hospital. The driver had minor injuries and the pregnant woman and the child are in critical condition.

Lozano had minor injuries and was found to be intoxicated at the scene, police said.

Search for missing 3-year-old Lina Khil enters sixth day. Here’s everything we know.

Search efforts for missing 3-year-old Lina Sardar Khil are still in full force on Christmas Day as San Antonio police and the FBI work to locate her.

Although the police presence at the family’s home may look different due to the holiday, SAPD said the search efforts will continue and that their resources are being redirected “to be proactive as possible.”

The search for Lina began Monday evening after she disappeared at the Villas Del Cabo apartment complex in the 9400 block of Fredericksburg Road.

She was last seen wearing a black jacket, red dress and black shoes.

Police continued to search the areas around the apartment complex on Friday in hopes of finding Lina, but were unsuccessful. They also requested the help of an FBI rapid response team.

The community held a prayer vigil for Lina on Friday at St. Francis Episcopal Church.

San Antonio police released the following video of Lina on Friday evening:

Below is the latest information available about the search for Lina as of Saturday, Dec. 25.

SAPD asks for public’s help, tips to aid in search for Lina Khil

San Antonio police are asking for specific people to reach out to its Missing Persons Unit to help aid in the search for Lina.

Any residents who were at the Villas del Cabo Apartment Complex, which is located at 9400 Fredericksburg Road, between 4:30 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. on Monday, are urged to contact SAPD at 210-207-7660 with “actionable tips.”

Also, anyone who spoke with Lina or her family at any time on Monday is urged to contact police as soon as possible.

“No detail is too small as we continue to search for Lina,” SAPD said in a release.

Although the police presence at the family’s home may look different as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day approach, the department said their resources to aid in the search for Lina are being redirected “to be as proactive as possible.”

Police are treating the disappearance as a missing person case, not an abduction

Though San Antonio police are asking the FBI to deploy its child abduction rapid response team to aid officers in their search, McManus clarified that investigators do not have any reason to believe Lina was abducted.

“If it were an abduction, we could be looking for an individual or have evidence of a child being abducted,” McManus said on Wednesday. “Right now, we don’t have any of that. That may change, but right now, it’s still a missing person.”

Another reason they are treating it as a missing person case is that there is not currently a suspect, he said.

SAPD has used canines in the search, which is still contained to the San Antonio area.

But the FBI’s rapid response team has resources that the department doesn’t, McManus said.

“If we have video that’s not real clear, they can work on their end to clarify any video footage,” he said. “They have resources, they have boots on the ground here that are helping us canvas the area.”

FBI agents have been seen knocking on residents doors, as well as checking in with nearby businesses.

“FBI showed up and they searched my apartment. They looked under the bed, under the couch outside They had this questionnaire. Going through questions, ‘Would you be willing to give a DNA sample if needed?’” said an apartment resident who did not want to be identified.

Alex de Hoyos, manager of the Belden’s Automotive across the street from the apartment complex, said he gave authorities the store’s security video on Monday.

The store’s cameras can see the entire entrance of the Villa Del Cabo complex, de Hoyos said, unfortunately, his cameras can’t see the side entrance of the apartments.

“Guy in plain clothes comes inside and flaps a badge and tells us what’s going on, and we were like, ‘Oh yeah, come on down. We’ll give you anything you need,” de Hoyos said.

Officers continued searching areas surrounding the apartment complex on Thursday, but as time passes, so do their chances of finding Lina.

“The longer the time lapses, the less hopeful we become,” McManus said.

Authorities sent a second AMBER Alert for Lina on Wednesday evening. The first AMBER Alert was sent to people’s phones late Monday night.

Muslim community, Crime Stoppers offer $150K reward combined for information on Lina

The Islamic Center of San Antonio and Crime Stoppers are offering hefty rewards for information that leads to the arrest of a suspect involved in the disappearance of 3-year-old Lina Khil.

A cash reward was put up by the Islamic Center of San Antonio on Wednesday. It initially started out as a $10,000 reward before multiple donations were received, totaling $100,000 on Thursday.

Crime Stoppers also announced late Thursday it is also offering a reward of $50,000. Both rewards combined total $150,000, if the tip helps lead authorities to the young girl, and an arrest.

Lina and her family are refugees from Afghanistan

Margaret Constantino with the Center for Refugee Services told KSAT Tuesday that the child’s family is among the Afghanistan refugees in San Antonio.

At least 1,300 people from Afghanistan have come through the Center for Refugee Services for resettling here.

While she knows very little about the family, including when exactly they came to the United States, Constantino says any missing child is everyone’s missing child.

“And like any big family with lots and lots of little kids, all of these children are precious to us,” she said. “Knowing this community, they’re very close-knit. So people will be out there beating the bushes, looking for this child.”

Lina disappeared at a playground

Lina was at a playground at the apartment complex with her mother and other children between 5-6 p.m. Monday when her mother left and returned to find her daughter missing, the chief said in a news conference Tuesday morning.

It is unclear exactly how long the mother was away, but McManus said she returned a “short time later.” McManus said the girl wasn’t left alone and there were other kids at the playground, which is open within the complex.

The family reported the child missing around 7:15 p.m., and an AMBER Alert was issued.

Officers searched the area by foot and air Monday but did not locate her. SAPD continued their search Tuesday morning and asked the FBI for assistance.

Officers went door by door to each apartment — there are under 300 units in the complex — to search for Lina.

Officers also searched for video, checked cars and dumpsters, and recorded license plates due to the “suspicious nature of the disappearance,” he added.

“We have every available asset in the police department working on the case right now,” he said, adding that “we are sparing no assets or resources.”

So far, the mother and residents have been cooperative, McManus said.

“Nobody comes and goes without talking to a police officer,” he said.

Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call SAPD’s missing person unit at 210-207-7660.

Family of four loses mobile home, three dogs in fire on Christmas Day, officials say

A family of four is left without three of their dogs and their mobile home on Christmas Day after it went up in flames overnight, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

The fire happened around 4:30 a.m., Saturday, in the 900 block of Pine Eagle Lane.

Fire officials said the fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread throughout the home. A mother, father and their two teenagers were able to escape safely.

However, three of the family’s four dogs did not make it out and died at the scene, according to SAFD. The other dog got out in time and survived.

Crews were able to put out the flames, but the home was deemed a complete loss due to the extensive damage.

Firefighters said the family was in the process of moving at the time of the fire and had packed most of their belongings, some of which were in the front yard.

“Thankfully none of us got hurt. We’re all here… we at least get to have Christmas together,” said Darla Voigt, mother of the family.

Her teenage son was the first in the home to become alerted of the fire. She said if he hadn’t, their family may not have been as lucky.

“He normally has his headphones on when he goes to bed and for some reason he had to recharge them and if it hadn’t been for that, I wouldn’t be here because the fire had just spread so fast,” said Voigt.

The family is still working to make arrangements as they figure out their living situation. Voigt said her children will be staying with friends in the meantime.

The investigation of what caused the fire continues.
