Here are some known foods that affect your sleep

Sleep Awareness Week begins on March 14. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should be getting between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.

However, 68% of adults say they struggle with sleep at least once a week.

“You have a risk of heart disease, cancers and stroke because sleep is like a medicine. That’s your time when you rejuvenate,” Jagdish Khubchadani, PhD, said.

But the key to getting a good night’s rest might be in what you do and don’t eat.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but it can also keep you awake. Apples are filled with natural sugar, which are slowly released in the body, keeping you alert and awake.

So can adding hot sauce to your meal before bed. Hot sauce raises your body temperature at bedtime making it harder to fall asleep.

But Asian foods containing soy, such as edamame or miso soup, are rich in magnesium, a mineral that can relax muscles and make it easier to fall asleep.

Some other foods to help you get some ZZZ’s include avocados, hummus, dark chocolate, bananas, cherries, fish and nuts.

And for wine lovers, go ahead and have that glass of red wine before bed. The skin on grapes used to make red wine contains melatonin, the sleep-producing hormone we naturally produce.

Fire guts East Side home, threatens second house

San Antonio firefighters battled a fire in an East Side home early Monday that, for a time, also threatened a second home.

They arrived around 1:45 a.m. and found a two-story, wood framed home in the 600 block of Hammond Avenue engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say all five people who had been inside that home managed to escape safely.

Because of the intensity of the fire, firefighters also had to remain outside and fight the fire from there.

They say a big concern was that the fire threatened to spread to the home next door.

Fire crews spent more than two and a half hours battling the flames.

They say the wood frame seemed to feed the fire.

Ultimately, they put it out and kept it from spreading to the home next door.

The heat from the fire, though, did cause some minor damage to the siding of that house.

Firefighters say the home where the fire started will have to be torn down because it is unsafe.

SA-based Zachry Hospitality close to finalizing plans for major Hemisfair project

Editor’s note: This story was published through a partnership between KSAT and the San Antonio Business Journal.

More than five years after San Antonio’s City Council approved a mixed-use development plan expected to funnel some $200 million in private investment into Hemisfair, Zachry Hospitality is moving closer to a finalizing a new deal for the former World’s Fair site.

The scope of what is ultimately constructed on the center city acreage could differ from what was initially envisioned.

“We’re in active negotiations with Zachary and the city, “Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corp. CEO Andres Andujar said.

Zachry Vice President Tara Snowden confirmed that those talks are progressing.

“We are close to finalizing agreements,” she said.

Zachry had pursued a plan to include the development of a 200-room hotel and a 150,000-square-foot office tower. At one point, it had hoped to complete construction by 2021.

While Zachry’s finalized plan for the downtown site may be somewhat different from what it initially envisioned, given new post-pandemic realities, it’s possible the company’s level of investment in Hemisfair will remain “substantially similar,” Andujar said.

“This project will be San Antonio’s shining jewel,” Snowden said.

The site of the 1968 World’s Fair, Hemisfair is an expansive park that’s home to Tower of the Americas and Institute of Texan Cultures, as well as shops, restaurants and a playground.

SA school system shuttling students to doctor’s appointments without counting them absent

The COVID-19 pandemic has furthered health issues, both physical and mental for families as a whole.

Children need extra care, but many parents have used up their time off caring for kids, or getting sick themselves. A lot of those parents are having to decide between taking kids to doctor’s appointments or missing work without pay.

That’s why the Jubilee Academies charter school system in San Antonio is stepping in.

Valerie Guzman has four kids at the Jubilee campus where she works as a health assistant.

“I’ve missed about, let’s say, two weeks during the COVID period. You know, it’s kind of hard to miss,” Guzman said.

That’s why she was thrilled to hear about the school’s new partnership with University Health System’s Teen Clinic at the Robert B. Greene center. It’s a public, one-stop shop for ages 10-24.

The students who sign up for the program at Jubilee leave school together, hop on a bus with a chaperone, and head to the clinic for their individual appointments. When they get back to school, they head straight back to class and are never counted absent.

“My son needed a physical and I put him on the list right away for that paperwork, and he was at his appointment the very next day,” Guzman said.

The appointments are on Mondays and Wednesdays and are for both physical and mental health.

“We identified the behavioral health needs where needed. So we hired a counselor to be able to refer to them, because we saw a high rise, especially during the COVID pandemic, with anxiety and depression,” said Diana Gonzalez, University Health System’s executive director of women’s health.

Gonzalez said every child who goes to the teen clinic is assessed for mental health.

“We are specifically trained to be able to ask the appropriate questions because they feel this is a trusted space. It’s a welcoming environment for these teenagers,” she said. “We work with the school nurses, the school counselors, the teachers and we all work together as a multidisciplinary need to take care of these, these teenagers.”

The clinic providers don’t just make mental health referrals.

“We have so many children with diabetes or more serious illnesses, they refer out to a clinic that is there at Robert B. Greene,” said Jubilee Student Services Director Diana Centeno.

The clinic emphasizes wrap-around services, including financial.

“Some of them don’t even have health care coverage or they don’t know how to obtain that. So we help them also with financial assistance and with any type of health care coverage, if needed,” Gonzalez said.

Centeno said there is also an pharmacy in the clinic. Prescriptions are filled and given to the chaperone. The chaperone then brings the medications to campus, gives them to the health assistant or the nurse, who then gives them to the parent.

Thirty students have already been signed up since the program started about two weeks ago, and they expect that number to rise quickly.

3 homes destroyed, residents displaced following multiple fires in Medina County

Multiple fires in Medina County destroyed three homes Sunday, leaving multiple people looking for new places to call home.

In Devine, the flames ruined two cars, two homes and a trailer, while also displacing 10 people total. But just 25 minutes away, a mobile home was ravaged by another fire.

“It’s crazy. Something you see for the first time in your life and it really freaked me out. But you know, I wasn’t there. Nobody was there to get hurt or anything. It’s just stuff that can get changed or replaced,” said Johnny Jimenez, owner of the mobile home.

Jimenez is counting his blessings. For him, that’s his life and that none of his neighbors were hurt in the fire.

The fire drew a large response at the Valley’s Mobile Home Properties Park, due to the close proximity of the trailers.

Hondo, Lacoste, Rio Medina and Castroville all responded to the scene. The fire is still under investigation, but Jimenez said he was burning leaves in the morning.

“This is a prime example why in central and south Texas, no one should be burning outside at the moment. The dry grass, the high winds… even if you think you have it contained, you don’t really,” said Natalia fire officials

At the Devine fire, there were people burning trash in a barrel when the winds picked up and carried the flames throughout the entire block, according to fire officials.

Other fire agencies were called to aid in that response as well, including Natalia, Hondo, Lytle, Big Foot and Castroville.

No injuries were reported, but fire officials believe some animals didn’t make it out.

Residents who were affected by the fires, including Jimenez, have found places to stay in the meantime.

There’s currently not a burn ban in Medina County but fire officials will enact one on Thursday.
