San Antonio Spurs to release special NFT collection in honor of head coach Gregg Popovich all-time wins

The San Antonio Spurs are honoring head coach Gregg Popovich’s 1,336 record-breaking career wins in a special way—with NFTs.

The basketball franchise announced the “1,336 Coach Pop NFT Collection,” which will consist of 1,336 NFTs, or non-fungible tokens.

POP and NFT. Two sets of three letters that I never thought I was gonna see together. Great move! Great cause! 👏👏👏 https://t.co/i0LBc7PjMg

— Manu Ginobili (@manuginobili) March 12, 2022

Popovich made NBA history Friday, winning his 1,336th regular-season game, the most out of any coach in the NBA.

The collection will feature digital recreations of Popovich’s hand-drawn play cards that helped the Spurs win five NBA Championships. The first five of the 1,336 will be distinct one-of-one NFTs that each feature a different play and court combination.

Those special NFTs will include the original hard copy of the play card, hand-drawn and autographed by Popovich, and a VIP Spurs experience at a game in San Antonio next season, Spurs officials said.

The five unique NFTs will go to the highest bidder in an auction. The additional 1,331 NFTs will go on sale for 0.1 Ethereum a piece.

All proceeds will go to the San Antonio Food Bank, Spurs officials said.

To participate in the auction, bidders must create an OpenSea account and a crypto wallet. The auction is set to go live on March 14 at 9 a.m. Central Time and will be open until March 17 at 9 p.m. Central Time.

NBA, social media congratulate Spurs’ Gregg Popovich on becoming winningest head coachRecord breaking win: Spurs’ Gregg Popovich becomes NBA’s all-time winningest head coach

NBA, social media congratulate Spurs’ Gregg Popovich on becoming winningest head coach

Friday night was a special night for not only San Antonio Spurs fans, but for sports enthusiasts and the entire NBA.

Gregg Popovich became the NBA’s all-time winningest head coach — with 1,336 regular-season wins — when the Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 104-102.

By doing so, he eclipsed his mentor and former boss Don Nelson. Popovich had tied Nelson on Monday night when the Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Lakers at home.

After the Spurs’ win on Friday, Nelson had a few words for the Spurs legend.

“I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of all your accomplishments and the wonderful things you’ve done for basketball worldwide,” Nelson said in a video posted by the Spurs and Golden State Warriors.

“But I’m most proud of what you’re about to accomplish now which is put me in second place in all-time wins.”

Nelson added that he “couldn’t wait” for the record-breaking day to come, and said he considers Popovich one of his best friends.

Of course, the cool Coach Pop gave much of the credit to Nelson, his team and “a whole lot of people” after the game.

“All the wonderful players, coaches, and staff that I’ve been blessed with, the support of this wonderful city. The fans support us no matter what. All of us share in this record,” he said. “It’s not mine, it’s ours, here in the city, because of all the people I just mentioned. That’s the joy of it.”

Current and former Spurs players like Manu Ginobili, Dejounte Murray, Tre Jones, Steve Kerr, Brent Barry and Michael Finley all took to Twitter to congratulate the G.O.A.T.

But even if you’re not a Spurs player or fan, the accomplishment is something to respect — and that’s what people on social media did last night.

Here’s how NBA teams and players, sports enthusiasts, and San Antonio businesses reacted to the accomplishment on social media.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Cole comes up short of repeat, falls to Dallas Madison in UIL Class 3A State championship

The defending state champion Cole boys basketball team entered the Alamodome ready to take on Dallas Madison with a state title on the line in a matchup two years in the making. The Cougars and Trojans missed out on an opportunity to face each other for the 2020 title due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and each program entered this game as the first- and second-ranked teams in Texas.

The game lived up to the hype, but Cole came up on short.

The Cougars erased a 10-point halftime deficit to lead late in the fourth quarter, but could not pull out a victory in a heartbreaking 53-51 loss to Dallas Madison on Saturday morning in the Alamodome. Four scorers finished in double figures for Cole, led by Trey Blackmore’s 14 points. Rodney Geter scored a game-high 19 points for the Trojans and was named the game’s MVP.

Cole ends their remarkable season with a 32-9 overall record.

Full recap, highlights and reaction from the State Tournament coming later this afternoon on air and online!

SAPD searching for driver in Northwest Side hit-and-run that sent man to hospital

San Antonio police are searching for a driver who struck a pedestrian at a Northwest Side intersection on Friday night and fled the scene.

The incident happened just before 8:20 p.m. in the 1700 block of Hillcrest Drive at Vantage View Drive.

Police said a 21-year-old man was walking across Hillcrest when a gray Dodge pickup traveling northbound on the street hit him.

The driver of the truck briefly stopped but did not render aid to the man, police said. The driver then left the scene in the truck.

The pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was taken to University Hospital.

Police said at the time of the accident, he was properly crossing the intersection though there is no marked crosswalk in the area.

Mother, daughter share transplant story to bring awareness to kidney disease screenings

After eight years on transplant lists, a San Antonio woman donated her kidney to her mother to save her life, and now they’re sharing their story to bring awareness to kidney disease.

Often referred to as a silent killer, most people don’t realize they have kidney disease until dialysis or a transplant is needed. There are few signs of the disease until it reaches its chronic stages.

Getting screened is free and can prevent years of dialysis, transplants, and costly medical bills.

A few chronic kidney disease statistics include the following:

9 in 10 adults who have kidney disease don’t know they have it1 in 3 adults are at risk for the disease14% of Hispanics have chronic kidney diseaseBexar County’s chronic kidney disease rate is 3.8 times higher than the national average

Jacqueline Marks found out she had kidney disease in 1995.

“I felt totally hopeless. I felt like this was a death sentence,” she said.

Marks said she had no education about what kidney disease was at that point in her life.

Luckily, she was able to get a transplant, but the process wasn’t easy. Transplant centers require patients to have a certain amount of money in the bank to be eligible for a transplant.

“The medication is a little pricey, and they don’t want the kidney to fail, so they want to see you have that money,” Marks said.

After 20 years, her donor’s kidney started failing. Dialysis treatments were needed to keep Marks alive, but another transplant was the goal.

Eight years passed while Marks waited on three different transplant lists. For many, treatment starts too late or isn’t enough.

“I have seen death. People you see coming in, and then all of a sudden, one day they’re not there,” said Marks about going to her dialysis treatment.

Marks’ daughter, Sheila Martinez, watched her mother’s constant struggle. After nearly a decade of watching her mom go in and out of treatment, she stepped in and decided to donate her kidney.

“It’s my mom. She’s always been there for me. I wanted to do it. I just feel like we were destined,” Martinez said.

Twelve weeks after surgery, the mother and daughter are healthy, and they now hope to spread awareness to keep others healthy.

Marks said she doesn’t ever remember being told to be screened for kidney disease during regular checkups. She hopes her story will prompt the younger generation to be proactive.

Anyone who wants to get checked for kidney disease can do so for free. The Texas Kidney Foundation will send people free testing kits to people’s homes. It also has free screenings in person at its events throughout the year.
